    Hi there

I have a Legend 900 I purchased a couple of weeks ago and find the gear change a bit clunky. Most times going down the box with a little rev it's fine. Going up the box. . . . sometimes . . not every time . . . it's like I just keep getting it wrong and you can feel the dogs on the gears clash and then mesh. I'm sure it's me. (Back on bike after 10 plus years)

Any advice would be great. I watched a guy on youtube riding a thunderbird sport and he was flawless. So it's got to be my left foot ha ha ha ha

Anyway. Fitted a centre stand and grab rail. Full service and new sprockets.

Just need to stop clunking that box. I'm pretty sure I'm pulling the clutch in far enough. OR AM I ???

    Thank you for any pointers

@Mike_Oxmall Do you need a fluid change and bleed. And you will get to know when to change and never change on full throttle. I know you will think i am talking rubbish but it all makes for a clean change.

Pretty much all of the T300s I have - or have had - will 'crash' (to some degree) into first, even if 'double de-clutched' but, once rolling, the gear changes up or down seem faultless and quiet ... given that engine revs for up or down changes are 'appropriate'. Beyond first to second gear, changes up can even be made smoothly without using the clutch - so too changing down, but that's not quite so certain and not really very wise - as long as you have the engine revs/speed well matched.

Are you sure you have the right engine oil in there? The gearbox is in unit and is lubricated by the engine oil so the right amount of good quality oil is vital. It should, I think, be 10w40 semi-synthetic so it might be worth an oil and filter change with the correct vloume of decent quality oil to see if that improves matters.

Beyond that, check that you have the right amount of fresh hydraulic fluid in the clutch system and that your drive chain tension is correct. If/when all of those stars align, the Legend's gearbox should be faultless, smooth and quiet.

Lovely machine's .. I've had mine for around 15 years now, nowhere near as tidy as your beastie shown here, but it's been very good to us, the only real nuisance it's caused has been the ignition pick-up crapping out ... very common, apparently ? Still pulled an 11.95 quarter at the drags, though, haha !
Interesting what your problem is .. and the possibilities that have been put forward as to why .. agree, and think you should do all ... can't hurt ?
The only other thing I could think of, which has been mentioned, is making sure chain tension is correct, correct oil, and also, the oil level is correct ?

Or maybe .. lighter boots for a gentler feel :grinning::grinning: !
Good luck, they're a pretty rugged thing, and it maybe only getting the miles in and being used to it ?

Make sure you check the chain at a tight spot if you need to adjust it. Quality oil can help gear changes, silkolene etc, too much slack in clutch cable ie wrongly adjusted.

Thank you for all the replies.

I'll change the clutch fluid and see how we go as I've just serviced it.

Full service. Oil & Filter, Plugs, Coolant and changed the gearing slightly - 19T front & 40T rear.

I'll also experiment with straight shifting up and a blip on the down.

I'll let you know how it goes.

    Thanks again
