I don’t want to reignite the pro/con arguments for Brexit here but I did wonder, with this morning's news, what effect it may have on the price of bikes next year. A cursory look on the net at carwow.com suggests a potential hard Brexit hike of: UK +2% Japan +10% EU +20% That would make Ducatis look very expensive indeed. I should say I haven't had time to determine how they're coming up with the figures so I put them here for speculation only.
‘Here’ might as well be the wall of a well known closeted facility! Japan will almost certainly be covered by a trade deal in short order. Whatever tariffs apply from Thailand are unlikely to change but may reduce. BMWs and Ducatis....... well that rather depends where they are made. The EU is increasingly incentivising off shoring as its protective tarrifs are on the wrong side of current trends. Equally I would not pretend the size of the UK bike market is a clincher all on its own.
I don't think we should be to concerned mate. These things have a way of sorting themselves out, there is a lot of shite being put out there at the moment and it is likely to get worse bewteen now and December....
I'm not jumping to any conclusions yet but there are some predictable items based on specific outcomes. It may be a convoluted picture but you can bet someone will be paying.
You may be able to take the Japan +10% off your list, as the UK and Japan have just agreed a Free Trade Agreement https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-and-japan-agree-historic-free-trade-agreement Edit: And it's apparently better than the EU-Japan deal
