I class this as a family day out, as my daughter was with me! We've become registered marshals with the MSA to help out the Solway Car Club, as they are the one's that run the Grass Autotests I do with my kids from school, plus my daughter drives, so to pay back I thought we should help marshal at their Solway Coast Rally. So early start, 6:00am on a SATURDAY !!!! We trundles off to the MOD range at Kirkcudbright and signs on. Unfortunately the daft buggers sent us to the wrong stage, where we stood for an hour before being collected. Turned out OK tho' as this meant we had to drive a stage and a half at rapid knots to get to our correct point on Stage2. The brakes on the freelander were absolutely stinking keeping up with the safety car !!! Bloody good fun tho! Theygreat advantage of being a marshal is access to the great spot and then be as close to the action as is safe. Was a bit scary seeing the first motor bombing down the road at 120+ straight at us, but sure the 2 tonne of straw would have deflected it easily. This is my pal Iain, he's the guy that sponsors our autotesting and helps run the cars at the events. We did a lot of this, sitting, waiting! And more waiting, whilst they dealt with an off mile up the road from us. MG Meastro ! When did you last see one of these? Nice enough spot to sit and wait! Look to the top right, a bit of target practise! Just went onto the MSA website and did the online training to become a registered marshal, dead easy to pass 15 questions and you are in. Grand way to spend a day. We even got got some action after a car broke down on the road and had to slow cars down coming into our section, great fun. Maybe look at doing some more events or just stick to our local one's.
