I popped into Lind's adjacent Triumph and Harley dealerships in Watford with a mate yesterday. Couldn't believe the Triumph showroom... no more than a dozen bikes in stock due to the chip shortage, and half of them were Speed Triples!

It looked like an empty expanse of space, and I can only imagine what it must be doing to the sales team's morale.

Same here in the Isle of Man. Here for nine days, beautiful weather, beautiful roads, beautiful scenery and no bloody bike ! I'm here in the car.. There's lots of work being done on the course, part of the mountain road has been closed for re-surfacing and there's work going on on some of the corners. Hope to get back here on the bike for the TT.

BMW dealer here was chockablock yesterday. Those guys were loaded with inventory. You could barely walk between the bikes. Stopped into Triumph Roswell for a look see last weekend(N. side of Atlanta). Same thing. Bikes everywhere.

What's the backstory on this chip shortage? A UK thing?

No, it's a global problem that started with demand outstripping supply but was then exacerbated by CV-19.

Perhaps it's that nobody's buying bikes in the US then. We're getting absolutely slammed on prices across the board. It's nothing short of laughable in some cases.

Was working at an engineer for Aerospace last week - he told me that a certain car manufacturer is buying in new Samsung televisions - just to scrap and remove a rewritable chip.

I was there a few months ago and even if they had a showroom full of bikes, the prices they wanted for them would ensure they still had them now..!

Yes there is a demand and second hand bikes are selling well. But as 0ldskool says the dealers are still asking extortionate amounts for their bikes. Just need the big dealers to feel the pinch now and a few go into liquidation to teach them that we bikers are fed up being ripped off. That goes for all the people that think we are an easy touch.

I think the war in Ukraine is going to make this either worse or extended. Trading in Nickel was suspended due to the rise as Russia is the third largest exporter of the metal needed for the chips

I've had my Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro on order from December.. I've been told that I can expect delivery around the beginning of June.. I originally ordered a red one, but Triumph have stopped production of the red and replaced it with blue. I was also told it was because of a chip shortage for the lack of supply in the dealerships. Eagerly waiting for mine to arrive in blue..

During my last conversation with my trusted dealer (www.gesslbauer.at), he told me that 2022 but also 2023 is a big problem for the manufacturers. Due to missing parts, not only chips (!), the delivery quantities are extremely reduced. At TRIUMPH he gets partly only 20%-50% of the required bikes delivered, which he ordered in 2021. It is even worse with YAMAHA. Their delivery system was hacked with a cyber attack, resulting in an absolute delivery disaster. Bikes and spare parts for Europe were delivered to Australia and vice versa, making it necessary to replace them, because they can't allow vice versa and the parts are also not usable. In parallel, we have yes all noticed the price increases of at least 10-15%, which will now also show in new tires.
Individual models, such as the new TIGER 1200, which will be delivered from the end of this week, are already sold out here in Austria until the end of June 2022.

Lots and lots of supply issues, not just chips, there was a company in Mexico that supplied Kawasaki with injection moulded parts, a proportion of it’s workforce died of Covid and the remainder stopped going to work fearing that they would catch it, the company went bust, so a Kawasaki dealer told me at the weekend , his bike allotment has been halved and he’s wondering what he’ll do in the coming months, the downside for us is they’ll charge top whack for everything!, in my opinion it never been very sensible to buy a brand new bike when one with 2k miles on it is thousands of pounds cheaper, but that said second hand bike prices are also inflated at present, luckily I’ve got 7 bikes at the moment and there’s only 7 days in a week so I don’t need to buy one just now :)
