So SWMBO decides times up on her helmet as it was purchased around 2006. We discussed options as I'm a Shoei person myself. She tried various makes on as initially she was tempted by a flip front. I asked what she planned to do with the old one and as she didn't want someone to use it she cut the straps off. With permission I decided to do a bit of testing. Here it is minus the visor
So arming my grinning ten year old with a sledge hammer I said give this small log what for to get your eye in. A couple of accurate shots later right here we go. Point of aim (POA) = top of forehead First strike, a good direct hit.
My Shoei has some years left yet Rich. Anyway, a few more hits and pictures. There is no obvious internal damage to the polystyrene shell. Edit.. Double posted one image but can't seem to delete.
I agree tcbandituk, a friend has a collection like yours from track days Please bear in mind this is a 12 year old helmet although she has looked after it, cleaned after every ride and stored in a helmet bag under the stairs.
So my assistant had five goes at it and the damage really was very limited. Stand aside says I, here swap me the hammer for the camera!

Anyway, the moral of the tale is, an Arai might offer some reasonable level of protection when there's a mad axe man on the prowl. We have Eldon to thank for this public service information.
Advertising makes us think that some brands are the Best. Then obviously the higher the price the better, Right? nope. I have maybe 10 helmets that are past their shelf life, although thats also not so true. The collection includes, Arai, Shoei, AGV and Schuberth. All are full face and 2 are flips. Shoei race is the noisest. Just befor I got my TTR, my go to one was the Schuberth S2. Dayglow yellow, Quiet, inner fog shield, drop down sun visor and very comfortable. Now with lower bars on the Thruxton R my neck was getting sore. So here comes the Shark Vision R. wow. Huge field of vision, and all the other amenities of the much higher priced german one. Love my Shark! oh, few yrs ago i dropped my Schuberth C1 off a 4 foot high shelf in the garage and it cracked from ear to ear. Age, maybe, but no more Greman helmets for me.
That's all very good, but have you subjected them to the ttf axe test? It's the new industry standard.
I have worn an Arai Helmet for many years now. I am well pleased with mine and plan to wear it for many more. The results of your hammer test is just what I am counting on! Thanks for sharing bro!
So first full on swing by me; I have these in video sequences but they are too big to upload hence snatched single shots. On this hit I sensed the top flexed inwards which in terms of impact absorption and energy transfer had to be a good thing.
Interesting, I've always had AGV or Arai helmets, luckily never had to actually test one. Just bought a 2018 Thruxton with low clip ons and can't see too well if I try and look behind me. I think the chin bar of the helmet hits my shoulder, not a problem on any bikes with handlebars. So the Shark Vision has a larger aperture? Is it noisy? Cheers
Instead of destroying helmets once theyre done, why not donate them to one of the many groups doing on scene accident training or your local ambulance station for training purposes. Removing helmets after an accident is a skill that needs practice and many helmets need slightly different techniques. Just a thought ................ might save someones neck, literally.
