Due to a knee op and living in an area with hills I cant ride a normal bike. Has anyone tried an electric bike. If so, any pros/cons/recommendations? Cheers
I’m in the same boat as you mate, since my bike accident a few years ago I can’t ride a normal pushbike very well. As a result I’ve got a £1000 road bike sat in the garage gathering dust I’ve just resigned myself to using the ones with engines.
Thanks for that mate. I know nothing at all about them but need to get some exercise in some shape or form. Good info thanks. I had set in my mind about a £2k budget Any recommendations on minimum battery Wh?
Hi Sleepy Owl, I too have an e-bike, mine is a Kalkoff with a 17amp/hour battery which gives me a range of about 80 miles. The quoted range in sales brochures is rather optimistic, rather like quoted mpg!! Nevertheless it is a useful comparison. I would also recommend a crank mounted motor, rather than one mounted in either wheel and go for the largest battery capacity you can. I would also suggest one with gears and different levels of motor assistance rather than the G-tech system which just gives the level of assistance it thinks suitable at the time. As has been said before £2k will get you a good bike with good components and also look at discounted or last years models. Best of luck hope you find one
Thanks for the help guys. Decided to go with below. Was going to go with 2019 model but an additional £200 for the 2020 and they threw in a helmet/mudguards/ tools etc @Privateer You were absolutely right. I rode it for 10 mins and was hooked. Cant believe how much it helps having the electric Cube Reaction Hybrid Pro 500 2020 Electric Mountain Bike
My middle boy has one he didn't want a moped it's a halfords one does about 50 Miles in constant use he loves it as he overtakes the mamils on their racers
Did a serious 30 mile off road lake district ride last weekend (hired a cube electric full sus) big climbs and rough terrain. Friggin’ awesome ... wish I could afford to buy one, still works you out, but without being killed on the first big climb. I don’t have strava, but one of the lads passed on this pic of the route... the lake is Derwent water
Most places have interest free credit on them and now treat none of us are allowed in the pub it could be affordable
The other half had a basic early model electric bike, which she bought second hand locally. Basically a mountain bike and weighed a ton but went along OK. Last year we sold it and bought two folding electric bikes, which we can fit in the back of the Qashqai. The idea was that we could take them with us on our house-sits and bugger off to the pub! That's all gone out of the window at the moment but it worked well last year! Bought direct from Germany and arrived within three days.
Have a look at chain reaction cycles online they’ve got money off there electric push bikes for st Patrick’s day, they do many brands but mainly vitus which do really well in mtb magazines as they are usually much better spec and slightly cheaper.a mate a has a Halfords mtb electric bike which goes well but has been back to the shop quite a few times with problems, you can convert standard push bikes into electric bikes, I’ve had ago on one it went really well but it cost £800 for the conversion but it was good for 50-70 miles.
Yeah, pretty much... electric full susser... https://www.cyclewise.co.uk/bike-hire-demo-bikes/bike-hire
