Ade, it's ok doing nails and a bit of steel but I'm wondering when you're going to rub down to bare metal and coat a fleet of these :-

I can almost hear the item at the end of the news. "And on a lighter note a man was arrested in Portsmouth today after rowing a dinghy full of wet and dry paper and assorted aerosol cans that he claimed were rust preventatives. Police later confirmed the man had escaped from an assylum well known to them and was harmless but for everyone's sake was being returned to his carer with instructions to increase his medication."

Yes it does make me think! The results so far would suggest that for non winter use all of them seems to offer some short term protection, but once you add salt to the mix the FS365, GT85 and WD40 soon break down. In this test so far the acf50 seems to be holding up the best so that may be down to how I applied it and the Waxoyl as I did wipe off the excess in both cases as both went on thicker than I wanted them too. How the Double TT has performed is still the big surprise to me though I wouldn't be happy spraying it anywhere there are bearings as like WD40 and GT85 it's got solvents in it that will dissolve any grease? To get a definitive answer this would need to be done under stricter laboratory conditions...... and before you ask the answer's no :D

So here we have it. A week on and only ACF50 isn't showing any signs of rust so is the winner in this test, though Double TT continues to impress in 2nd place and based on price and ease of application will be my choice. 3rd is Waxoyl as that too now shows signs of rust after a weeks worth of salt spray.

The only thing with acf50 is that the surface must be spotlessly clean otherwise you just seal the crud in. My previous experience of using it ended with me getting it all off as the crud stuck to it but today it's dry to the touch so I may have ridden the bike while it was still fairly wet, rather than let it dry for a few days first. If anyone has any tips/experience of applying it please feel free to add you experience to the thread

Ade many thanks for this, your test and analysis will influence my choice of winter protection. Well done that man.

I have a small cloth soaked in acf50, keep that sealed and use it every time. I also used some in a small pot and an inch paint brush to apply. The spray on is crap from the aerosol. UsedUthe pump once, was much better (borrowed).
Always intend to clean my old spray gun up (full of waxoyl) and use that.
Always clean amd dry the bike throughly, and an extra day apply then let it dry for a week or more before riding. Usually a weekend job, twice a year, before spring and then end of summer.

Right you greedy bastids..... I've just chased eurocarfarts and I've not had my Double TT yet cause you lot have bought them all:laughing:

From the replies it confirms there is no single magic bullet solution.

If you don't ride in the salt then all of the 6 products offer some form of protection as for the first 2 days it rained and none showed any signs of rust.
    20180125_133138_1516888248192_1.JPG

After spraying with salty water a further 2 days later the FS365, GT85 and WD40 had started to rust
    20180126_145712_1516980613462_1.JPG

Another day and the GT85 and WD40 were showing the most
    20180127_132236_1517059455216_1.JPG

After another 2 days things were getting really bad on the FS365,GT85 and WD40 with the waxoyl showing the first stages of rust while the ACF50 and Double TT were still rust free
    20180129_113732_1517226112769_1.JPG

Another 2 days on and only ACF50 remains rust free
    20180131_162109_1517430819013_1.JPG

So after 9 days in, the first 2 without any salt, the remaining 7 with ACF50 has held up the best, but it's not as easy to apply as the others, the surface has to be clean otherwise you just seal and crud in and from my experience it does attract the crud, plus as Steve says it's a bu88er to get off at the end of winter. I also found that when washing your bike with it on it transferred to my microfiber mit and the suds in my bucket disappeared.

FS365 isn't designed to give long lasting protection, you have to keep applying it. Delboy's Garage did a vid on it where he applied it regularly and his Harley held up well so if you use it regularly it works ok. I used it on the GS with good results for nearly 2 years

Edit: I forgot to add that when I removed the engine bars and rear hugger from my GS last October there was corrosion on the bolts where they'd been inside spacers etc.but this wasn't visible when they were on the bike so water etc must have collected there, something Double TT, GT85 and WD40 would probably dispell

As I've said of the other 3 the big surprise was Double TT. It's as easy to use as FS365, GT85 and WD40 as you just spray it on and leave it but the test suggests it provides better protection than most of the others with it only being bettered in the test by ACF50.

The downside of GT85, Double TT and WD40 is they all contain solvents so you need to be careful around bearings and other places where grease exists.

As I've said before this doesn't include being applied to a bike and actually ridden so it's not covered any potential differences that could be causes by wash off or crud being thrown up at your bike.

    You pays your money.....

I've just been reading up on application advice for ACF50. First thing it says is the shelf life is only two years, after which some of the active ingredients disintegrate. So that's my home-supply going in the bin then. I'll pick up an aerosol can from work when I pop in today to pressure wash my Tiger. And it's best to apply to a microfibre cloth till it's damp than rub on sparingly so a very thin film is left behind - any thicker and it congeals and becomes a crud-magnet. And apparently it will creep in to those hard to get at areas. Don't use it on paint work - it won't harm it, but it will attract grit that will then get polished in, and your wax polish won't adhere too well either.
