A tale of bad news and good news.

I bought a pair of Altberg Hogg boots - dual use, walking and biking and seriously quality piece of kit. The only problem is the fasteners from #4 up are metal runners and hooks. And due to the poor design of the Bonnies, these scrape the crankcase when changing gear leaving some pretty deep gouges. YIKES!!!

The good news and is I emailed a complaint to Altberg. The upshot: of course there have never been any complaints before in over 30 years, but send them back, pay the postage, and they will replace the metal runners and hooks with plastic ones like in their lightweight military boots. Can't say fairer than than that for customer service.

Not particularly happy mate. Some chain cleaner, satin black from a rattle can, a touch of silicone oil and it's only noticeable on close inspection.

As you can imagine, I was mortified.

Specialist engine paint we use in the workshop. Done by someone who has a clue about what they are doing - so not me obviously.

I think it's Holts. I'll try to remember to look when I'm in Monday. Otherwise remind me.

So add in the cost of a tub of Dr Scholl's athletes-foot powder. Still a bargain. I kept looking for Altberg army surplus but could never find a 9.5 wide fitting. As it was I called in to the factory shop in Richmond on the way home from August's Scotland trip and got these. Normally £195, reduced to £165 because the stitching on the right boot gear change is slightly crooked (you seriously need a magnifying glass to see it).

Wow, I have similar scratches on my T100 casing. Since it's only a few months old I was wondering if they were from before I took delivery and I simply missed them. I have Altbergs (love them) I use for longer trips but just use hiking boots around town, but on checking they have similar metal runners. It's a bit cost prohibitive to send the Altbergs in for upgrade from the States so I'm now wondering if I could fabricate some sort of rubber strip to protect the casing. However it would have to fit the beauty and style of the bike, not just some slap on junk. Any suggestions?

I have helicopter tape on my tank to avoid scratches, put on wet, heat with hair dryer to remove, comes in different thickness, good stuff.

I'll look into the Helicopter tape, though that would mean polishing out the scratches first. The case also looks like it has a clear coat as well.
