Hi guys. I've bought a 2016 Triumph tiger explorer XRT. (Gen 2) Very excited! Bikes on 24,000 miles. It hasn't had its big 20k service (previous service history is sketchy)..I'm quite handy so going to most of it myself. Oil/filter spark plugs air filter/ coolant/brake fluid etc...(i'll use dealer tool to balance throttle bodie etc) However, would you recommend doing the valve clearances? Are they normally out of spec....and, if so, does any one know of any good mechanics/specialists or dealers that would do this job at a 'reasonable' price? (Don't fancy doing it myself) Or any other maintenence advice you could give me please? I'm based in the North West. TIA
you will also need to use the dealer tool to purge the ABS system, the valve check is straightforward, if any need adjusting it will necessitate cam removal, its doubtful if any will need shimming unless its been ridden really hard, as you mention you are handy with servicing and repairs, if any adjustments are required it is as mentioned a straightforward job, with regards to any shims you may require you will have to order them once you know the size, that will delay matters a little while, unless you have some to hand from previous jobs.
I have dealer tool already fortunately which I've used on previous triumph bikes. I'm more of a hobby mechanic and watch a lot of YouTube 'how to' videos to get myself by. I just felt valve clearance adjustments/ shimming may be a bit beyond me.....however, if they may all potentially be in spec I may try...(however, not sure how hard the bike was ridden previously....
Hi, I would take the cam cover off yourself and check the clearances, that way you have peace of mind, it's easy to do, and if they are not within tolerances and do require shimming at least you know and can then get the job priced up. If you look on Bikerstoolbox you will see a shim chart to assist you, just print it off, saves time doing it yourself.
There is also a "one time" camshaft adjustment at that first valve service. There is a Gen 1 manual which covers most of the Gen 2 stuff you would need to do. www.marksmotorcycleparts.co.uk
