this year my son and I did an anticlockwise trip round the NC500 and had a fab time. Next year we are considering the lake district or Wales .We aim to be away for 6 days leaving from Argyll so days one and 6 will be travelling to and from the start and finish. Ideally we would be doing a max of 150 -200 miles a day except for.first.and last travellingo and from home. Any route suggestions ? Thanks
Lake District is nice enough but tends to get very busy in summer and the prices are in rip off territory (or they were last time I was there, a few years ago now, and I do mean the last time!!! Never again!). North Wales/Snowdonia gets busy as well but is still a bit pricey, although not unreasonably so. Mid Wales is a hidden gem and slightly off the tourist trail. South Wales, along the M4 corridor, is fairly busy and more industrial, but still worth a visit. Balmoral in Moffat does good meals at a decent price. Also Lockerbie, Penrith, Carnforth truckstops and Warrington/Lymm sevices (used to be a truckstop) are all decent food stops (guess what my job was before retirement!). Enjoy your trip.
This guy has just put up a video of a trip in the Lake District, the roads look really quiet.. unless you are there at the weekend when no doubt it will be busy!!
Agree with Steve about South Wales (daughter and son both at University there), but avoid the M4 corridor and Newport, Cardiff and Swansea and you'll be fine. Start at Mumbles (past Swansea) and venture along the Gower Peninsular.
There are some quiet roads to be had in the Lake District but they are well off the beaten track, what I'd call minor B roads and has been previously mentioned, prices are astronomical.
As already mentioned mid Wales has some great roads and scenery, take a look at the Elan valley and the surrounding area.
