2018 Tiger Xca With 360 Km Won't Start

    Hi all,
    My brand new 2018 Tiger 800 XCa is stored inside my heated garage for winter and I start it once in a while.
    Although today, headlights turned on with the ignition on, showing bike to be in neutral, but the starter refused to kick, horn refused to blow, home button and joystick not working, heated seat not working, fog lights not working, blinkers not working, in fact only the emergency button and lights and heated grips are working. Checked fuses and all are ok, battery voltage 12,3.
    What is happening?

    99% certain you have a flat battery. If left unattended and periodically started it will drain more than you put into it. Your best friend is a smart charger that detects fall off in battery and kicks in.
    A healthy battery reads 12.7. - 12.8 v across the terminals. Without ant electrical load 12.3 is definitely tired!

    Well, I let it charge overnight but still the same. Battery reads 12,9 and won't even honk the horn. It sounds as if something is making a continuous buzzing sound as soon as the ignition is turned on and it is not the fuel pump. That later one does come on until primed and then shuts off. There is not even a clicking sound when activating the starter. Fuses all look good. That buzzing sound is abnormal, I don't remember it. It seems to be coming from the engine right hand side, near the top.
    Also, the service indicator wrench now stays on steady and I have a service message. Bike has 360 km!

    Not got an immobilizer/alarm fitted by any chance?

    Don't just do a visual check on the fuses, do a continuity check, if they are alright then dealer time

    Have you checked wiring on clutch lever switch?

    I didn't but considering the bike has 360 km and has been started several time in storage I don't think it could be related.

    Yeah, what puzzles me is that missing functions are on both handle bar controls and I have that strange buzzing sound when ignition is turned on, which varies in pitch when I turn the accelerator handle. I will charge the battery off the bike tonight and tet once more. The 30 Amp fuse under the battery was also OK.

    And time to stop starting the bike if you’re not going to ride it I think. As has been said by doing so you are taking more charge out of the battery than is going in, and doing other harm like acidic condense in the exhaust and engine internals. My bet? The battery is dead and won’t respond to charging. Be honest with the dealer and tell them you’ve been starting it periodically thus giving them a clearer idea of the issue. A new battery should solve the problem.

    I agree that swapping out for a known good battery would be handy, as well as trying your battery in another bike that you know has no problems. There is so much electronic crap on the bikes, esp. with the CANBUS system. A low battery will give you all kinds of weird symptoms. If the uncommon noise you hear is the starter relay stuck open that could be why so much of your stuff doesn't work, except I would think that would cut out your lights and horn as well. I have a 2018 XRt with keyless ignition. I run my GPS straight off the battery with no relay off the ignition and it will run the battery down in less than a week, even with the GPS turned off. Apparently the power cord itself has enough of a parasitic draw that it drains the battery. I normally plug all my bikes into Battery Tenders all the time but had been lazy with the new Tiger expecting to ride it again sooner than I did. I did put on 3000 miles in a month and a half, just doing day rides. But it had some weird electrical gremlins and when I put the bike back in the shop after owning it less than two months they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. They had it for two months and finally gave me another new 1200 XRt off the showroom floor. After riding this new XRt for a few hundred miles I'm discovering there were a number of things that didn't work properly on the first bike and i just didn't know it. I didn't know they made an XCa with keyed ignition. I like the convenience of the keyless ignition, but I think they answered a question no one was asking. My fork lock is also electrically activated, so if the battery really goes south, you can't unlock the fork. That could be a real pain in the @$$. Good luck getting yours sorted out and let us know what you find out.
