So after a smart four two decided he would test out his front bumper protection with the front of my bike, trying to teach me to fly, the damage appeared minimal, mirror, indicator, bar end, snapped brake lever, scratched pegs and brake pedal, oh and a severed abs cable, the insurance has come back to me with we wont be fixing it as its too much (£5k) turns out there was damage to the ohlins, the disks, the radiator and the fly screen too
So dilemma time, get the bike back and a payout, or take the full value of the bike as a payout

Oh, this sounds so similar to my situation at the moment.
I just found out mine is a write off too
I guess it all depends on 4 factors.
1 How much they offer to replace the bike
2 How much they ask for you to buy your old bike back
3 The cost to repair it yourself should you wish to or able to.
4 The value of any accessories on your bike you wish to recover

Sorry to hear you are having to go through this and best wishes in getting an agreeable settlement

They said that it would not be recorded as it isn't beyond economical repair, but they won't do it, it was second hand to me so not sure whether I can get a new on however there are not many used examples at the moment.

I would go for a payout to cover a comparable replacement.

See what they value it at as a buy back vs the payout. Ask for a copy of the damage report. See if you can obtain a quote from a dealer for the parts that is damaged, subtract 35% off that and you should know what you're in for sourcing the parts second hand. This is if you can find everything you're going to need. I tend to agree with darkman. Good luck either way bud, these things are never pleasant.

Sorry to hear this buddy. I trust you are OK.

I would personally push for a payout providing it's a decent deal. Also take your excess into account. Unless you have an excess protection the agreed price will drop due to the excess deduction.

Try get some comparison as this would defo help your negotiation

    All the best buddy

Yeah I'm ok, I was shuck up, I've never had a bike accident before so a bit weird,
I'm in negotiations with them to put me on a new bike as there isn't really a secondhand market for the 16 yet

Friend of mine wrote off his bike 1000RR and bought it back off the insurance company, but tells me that he was only able to get 3rd party insurance for it as no-one would give fully comp on a write off.

unfortunately he has crashed again and is now without bike.

Worth looking into before buying back.

Dont forget you can reclaim and excess that is deducted from the payout as uninsured losses through the legal calims department from the other party.

    Uninsured losses to reclaim

    - Excess
    - Road tax while off the road
    - Damaged Helmet/Leathers/Gloves/accessories
    - Time off work
    - Phone calls / postage
    - Personal injury
