    Hi all

I have a well used but perhaps not so well loved 2005 speed triple that runs like a dream but needs some love and attention. I've been slowly working on it over the past few months. I decided to strip down the brake calipers this weekend and give them a good clean out, and take the opportunity to swap out the pads.

The front brakes were easy, but when I looked at the rear caliper I saw with despair that it looks like somene has stripped the 2 retaining allen bolts that hold the pads in place. The caliper itself is so cakes in crap that it's almost unrecognisable. I have every size allen known to man but the closest one turns in the the bolts when a bit of pressue is put on them so I suspect I the bolt is stipped and locked into the caliper. ,By forcing it I am obviously making the situation worse. I can see the pads have a bit of life in them but the pistons are virtually siezed so it needs sorting.

I am able to get the caliper off, just not get into it. If I try to move the pads apart they appear pretty jammed up.

Open to any advice on how to get the bolts out, or indeed throwing it in the bin and putting a different caliper on, but I have no idea how to source a replacment or compatible alternative!

If you are intent on keeping the caliper then I’d be inclined to remove it from the bike and use some penetrating oil on the threads leaving it to soak in and reapplying a couple of times. If you are able to then push the pads back in and with a pair of vice grips on the pins rotate them instead of trying to get an Allen key to fit. You could always force an Allen key in, the next size up, and try that to remove the pins. If it still resists then heat the alloy of the caliper with a hot air gun and perhaps use some freeze spray on the pins that should expand the alloy and contract the steel pin allowing removal. If you get them out inspect the threads carefully and consider replacing the seals and maybe even the pistons. Alternatively the bottom of the three links isn’t to badly priced for a new caliper.

You may get away with tapping in a tight fitting torx bit with a hammer then remove the bolts after giving them a good dose of 50/50 atf & acetone or pb blaster releasing oil

I made up Allen keys slightly bigger at 5.1 mm perfect fit.
If you can' undo send to me and ill remove them for you.
Made up a key for Dozers Dad.
Even a new key is 4.95mm and is a bad fit.
