I recently bought a 05 triumph daytona 955i for $600 with a hole in the bottom size of crankcase. What are my options on engine swaps and should i try repairing the hole or is it shot? I attached pics. 20201003_170206_HDR.jpg

It would be tempting to say that what you have there is a rolling chassis.....

If you first ask the question ‘what happened and why?’ you may well find a lubrication/cooling/bearing/whatever failure that has left its fingerprints all over the internals. It really boils down to time and money and not knowing how much of both it will need. You may find a known good motor is less heartache and much will turn on your own wrenching skills.

Personally I would be inclined to source another motor and disassemble the blown one in slow time. The damaged case will itself probably be disproportionately expensive to replace but you may have a mangled crank etc.,

eeeek - how on earth did that happen....unless you know the full story you really have to go for a replacement engine and use that one for any usable spares that you can....... its an engine out job whichever way you go

Welcome Patrick - absolutely no question, replace the engine. Personally, I'd then strip down the old one purely to find out what carnage has occurred inside and salvage any useable bits.

Thanks for the reply posts. The feedback really helped me confirm my decision of a replacement engine.

Hi Mate & Welcome to the Forum
Scrap the engine & source a used one, can be a bit of a minefield getting an engine with some history but still better option than opening up the can of worms you have there, that's my opinion, but a lot depends on your abilities as a mechanic, budget & how quick you want a useable motorcycle?
