Hi everyone, I'm new, so sorry if my question is a bit redundant - though I did have a quick search before posting and couldn't find what I needed so here goes! I am currently in the motions of moving into Bristol city center. Unfortunately the city seems to be having a on going and fairly rampant issue with motorcycle theft - particularly of the Speed Triple variety. I understand that basically groups of kids are hot wiring them, thrashing them and then burning them out (the usual), I already have a hefty disc lock and will be looking at a ground anchor and decent chain for the garage. However I'm also considering an immobiliser or alarm but am looking for some honest opinions on them as to how good they are, which ones are recommended and any pros and cons I might not be aware of. Thanks in advance, Lewis
Im not sure about commuting on it yet, but it gets fair use either way - is this because of battery issues? And yes a brick built garage
I think you're probably right, for the cost associated with the immobiliser/alarm i could get several other physical deterrents...i'm almost certainly gibing it too much thought.
I hadn’t really considered data tagging. The local issue seems to be kids hot wiring, which is what that has prompted me to investigate. As for professional thieves looking to steal for sale overseas or cloning etc I don’t think much really puts them off.
Search the 'net and you'll find plenty of posts from owners wanting to remove existing alarms, often they're unreliable and more trouble than they're worth. Ade has already mentioned the xena disc alarms, I have a xena xx14 that fits my SpeedIII and can recommend, gives you an audible alarm but no risk of interfering with the bike if it was to go wrong. In the garage go for ground anchor and chain as strong as you can afford, cctv might be worth looking into if your garage is vulnerable? Minimise the possibility of people knowing there's a bike in the garage in the first place, don't leave the bike out on display longer than necessary. Security whilst out and about is always a problem, alarmed disc lock is a minimum IMO, when touring I have a chain/anti-pinch pin/padlock system which is as strong as is practical to carry, this locks mine and the wife's bikes to each other to make it as hard as possible to move. Get advice from a company that specialises in motorcycle security, I used Pragmasis, David Briggs there was very helpful, there are other companies of course.
Invest in a heavyweight ground anchor, an Abloy 362 and either a Pragmasis or Almax 19mm chain. That combination will deter most scumbags / scrote. TBH alarms are more hassle than they are worth. I havn't known one, that doesn't suffer from false triggering. When they go wrong, you can't start the bike..... grrrrr. Nobody takes any notice of them anyway
Hmm, okay well i think that puts the alarm/immobiliser issue to bed. Thanks for the recommended locks and chains - ill check them out and make a decision.
