Hi all, it's that time of the year again for me to renew my bike insurance and no doubt I will have the same argument with the insurance company about overnight storage. Basically I keep my bike under lock and key in a very well constructed wooden shed with wooden floor to the rear of our property which is fairly well hidden. However I have to insure the bike as being parked in the drive because my shed cannot be classed as a garage (which I sort of understand). If the shed had a concrete floor would it then be classed as a garage. Just interested to see how everyone else gets around this issue.

Yep I agree with what Jez says, Brick built etc, though you could play on other security items you use to keep it safe :D

I kind of thought that's the replies I would get, it just seems ludicrous because my bike is nowhere near the drive but that's where it is registered as being kept even though as I say it's stored under lock and key. I have looked into buying a shed which is recognised by insurance companies as a safe storage space but to be honest they look over priced and nowhere as good as my shed.:-/

So if it got pinched would they pay out if it wasn't in the drive and in the shed?

I think it would depend what declaration was made at the inception of the contract and what the contract terms say about parking whilst at home. For example if you've declared that the bike will be parked in a locked garage and one day you park it on the drive "just for a minute whilst you pop into the house for something" you are giving them grounds to not pay out at all or only as a % of the total.

    The details really matter.

I think they said it has to be kept in the garage overnight. Unless you can carry the garage around with you

Yes it is grounds although in reality in daytime it would've expected to be in use so long as it's away throughout the night. What ever it is the contract more so always suits the insurance company than the client.

Mine says if stolen within 500m of my garage then they won't payout!

When I organised the insurance last year I made sure that they understood that even though they stated the bike was kept on a driveway it was actually going to be kept in a shed. What more can you do? They will find a way not to pay out some how.

Recently renewed my insurance through Carol Nash, strangely without the need for the annual argument about the cost of renewal! 'Twas very close to last years' and not enough to faff about with through a comparison website - couldn't be arsed for just a few quid.
However, they checked (amongst other things) that nothing had changed regarding where my bike is kept. Apparently they regard a locked wooden shed as a garage for the purpose of housing a bike - well, that's what they said to me, and have done for the past few years.
    Could this be helpful?

'Tis a wooden floor which sits on a purpose built concrete base.
