This won’t necessarily be a riding trip, but the missis and I will be in London from the 27th through the 2nd. I’ve never visited England other than brief layovers at the airport, and that doesn’t really count.

Anyway, I just wanted to pick the braintrust here on things that the average tourist might not know, but shouldn’t be missed. We’ll of course go see some of the main touristy things, but don’t want that to be the only thing.

Any suggestions for an American couple who is taking a little break from the craziness?

While at Greenwich have a look at the painted hall and the chapel at the Old Royal Naval College just down the hill. The painted hall is often used as a movie location. Tomb Raider being one of them.

Presumably you'll be using public transport while in London (you'd be mad to try and drive!). The system in London is excellent and in case you didn't know you can buy a travel ticket that allows you to use the Underground and buses for a day, for not much money and a lot cheaper (and quicker) than tapping your credit card each time. In fact I think you can get a pass that covers a longer period than just one day.

I come from London, although moved north years ago. But I absolutely love the place and always look forward to visiting. You'll have a great time!

Yes, we’ll be using the trains and buses. That’s been our MO when traveling overseas in the past ten years or so (mostly, unless it’s a motorcycle trip). Appreciate the info on the tickets - very useful.

And don’t forget the DLR which is the best way to get out to Greenwich, you can try the pedestrian tunnel under the Thames on the way back which goes from close by the Cutty Sark under the river to Island Gardens DLR station.

Or take the boat up the Thames, always nice if the sun's shining and you're not in a hurry.

Madisons restaurant and bar. Try and get there just before sunset, it's a rooftop terrace overlooking St Pauls Cathedral, the Shard and a lot of the London skyline.

I visited my daughter in London and as well as doing tourist destinations like Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, Downing Street etc., I seem to remember going to Windsor and then across to Eton. Both were picturesque and interesting, and on a train route.

That was a while ago (she's been in New Zealand for 20 years!) so maybe someone can update that suggestion....

This travel blog might be an interesting read.....

I don't want to p*ss on anyone's parade here but I MUST add a word of caution if you're planning a visit to London. There is an ongoing epidemic of phone snatching thefts in London ....

and it's unlikely to be 'cured' while lowlife scum like these continue to waste the air we breathe.

SO .... make yourseles phone-user-savvy; keep your wits about you, especially in the tourist hotspots. Be on the look out for youths on ebikes; keep the phone out of sight unless you're using it and use it with great caution and a 360 degree awareness of the people around you.

London has some beautiful, iconic and historic places to see and to visit ... it also happens to house some of the very worst of 'humanity' - I use the word advisedly because many of them are selfish, worhthless, lowlife scum incapable of human empathy, respect or compassion.

They deserve nothing from life - including sympathy - so try to make sure they don't simply take what you've earned.

    Safe travels!

You should also be aware that pick pockets operate in the tourist locations. Be vigilant when out and about and you should be fine and enjoy the city and all it offers.

Very true - my wife and I were questioned near the beach in Barcelona by 4 guys in a car claiming to be police . They asked for passports, stuff that, I asked to see their identity cards and they got a bit stroppy.... after a few more minutes of debate I turned to my wife and said.... run!! ;)

Actually, I’m pretty sure that contactless pay as you go is the cheapest way to travel around London (spoken as a Londoner who travels through the city every week).

Yup TFL put a cap on fares, but if your credit card charges you for the currency conversion then it's best to try and get travel cards or oyster rather than tap and go on your credit card , oyster card you need to top up, @Marco Wikstrom have a look here. You can take a river boat down to Greenwich, here . a good sight seeing trip, or go see Hampton Court Palace, train from Waterloo to Hampton Court about 40 mins, still within the Oyster zone. You sound as though you're well travelled so the usual precautions apply.
For you there is the Ace Cafe but that's hard to get to The Bike Shed is easier and within central London, closed on Mondays, not far from The Tower of London and Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast, while you're there have a look down Brick lane for a curry or bagel. Just google markets and smithfields, camden etc will come up.

Thank you for the warning, and like others have stated any large city has its problems with petty crime. We’ve been lucky so far - more than 50 countries visited so far on 6 continents including supposedly “rough” parts of the world in the Middle East, Africa, etc.

Before traveling to Papua New Guinea a few years ago we were warned by anxious types who don’t travel much, and the State Department, of bandits they call “rascals.” We had a wonderful time and met only wonderful people. After traveling to Turkey 11 times hitch hiking all over - not one issue. Africa, no issues.

I think that people who don’t stay aware of their surroundings and look like an easy target get victimized, and most of that happens in their own city (or the countryside). Crime can be just as prevalent in the countryside, but we hear of it more in the city because there are simply more people. Our city has a reputation for crime too, but after decades of living here we’ve never had a problem.

Not saying it can’t happen and I don’t want to jinx myself, but I tend to feel safer in Europe than here in the USA. At least Europe isn’t awash in guns!
