Air Bag leathers have very thin but strong air bags built into the leathers, a small discreet compressed air capsule is inside the front, the system uses a small GPS module in the back of the leathers, this is removable to re charge it, as soon as you lose contact with your bike the air bags inside are activated in milliseconds, you look.a bit like the old Michelin Man, it protects your back, chest, arms, neck etc. The small gas canister can deactivate the inflated suit by pressing a button, it can be used up to 3 times before needing replacing, the cost is around £60. This system helps prevents the rider from what would be more serious injuries. These are now mandatory for all TT riders, Moto GP, WSB and many more events. The system is so popular that you can buy textile jackets with the same system, you can get inner or outer Gilets with the same system. Horse Riders are now using them. I look at it this way, would you prefer to drive a car with no air bags or one with them. Whilst there is no substitute for careful driving/riding if something can help save a person from more serious injuries, then why wouldn't you. RST Inamotion Air Bag Leathers can be bought for between £650 to £1,000. Personally I only ever wear 1 piece leathers, and have done for decades, as riders we are all different in our choice of kit we ride in. My eldest son got himself a set when they came out, my other son intends to get a set himself, and likewise as am I. I know the question was asking what they were, so hope it wasn't to much rambling. Ride safe from an ageing Rocker.

I have Oxford HG’s with a controller just like that on the dirt bike and it’s mounted on the bars. It wouldn’t fit in the handguards as they are a different profile to those on your Ducati, plus I find the buttons can be awkward sometimes requiring a firm, direct press. They’re about 12yrs old now so maybe they’ve improved somewhat.

    thank you, mrs v

    https://www.rst-moto.com/airbag

i confess that i ride motorcycles absent this level of protection, although my snell-rated helmets routinely cost some US$750, and my racing leathers were around $2000 by the time they were all done..

i am not interested in an internet subscription for my jacket, any more than i am interested in smart phone tuning of the machine that i ride. for me, dependence on connectivity is a vulnerability, not a benefit.

i will happily admit that the airbag jackets are clearly safer, but i am still comfortable maintaining the same level of risk that i always have.

its a philosophical thing, i guess. i am quite comfortable with the level of risk i assume without something like this.

after all, if safety at any cost was what we were all about, then none of us wluld be riding motorcycles in the first place.

im bemused by this. i certaily recognize the hazards involved. ive fallen down on my 1972 triumph at well over the ton, and it goes fast now than it ever did when new. but at some point i think we all reach a limit on some discriminant function that we are unwilling to go beyond, and a bluetooth subscription jacket is over that line for me.

without the connectivity, i might be more receptive? im not sure.

Just bought a load of red aluminium bolts for the engine covers on my Speedy - will post a pic when they're installed.

My mates think I'm a tart!!!
