    Hello Everyone,

A bit of advice please. I've a 2025 Speed 400 which I'm trying to get to 100mph (GPS) spending no money, or as little as possible. :)

I changed the front sprocket to a 16T and put in a cotton and oil air filter (both cost about £30 each). I use good oil and good petrol. Triumph won't help with any ECU changes, and I don't have access to anybody that can do any ECU changes (I live a bit out of city areas...). This morning I managed 98.8mph, and have done over 98 several times, but just need a little more. I put in a couple more psi of pressure in the tyres, but not enough to make the handling worse - just 2psi extra front and rear which helped to get to 98.8, but I don't want to add any more for safety's sake. My next thought was putting on an affordable end can to lose weight (although I'm not sure it'd add any power). All my times are GPS via the Beeline Moto 2.

Does anybody have any ideas other than eating less KFC or chopping off a leg? I'm also doing this on a straight rather than looking for a steep hill, etc.

    Thanks.

Would a complete new exhaust system help, deleting the cat and a straight through pipe?

Delkevic have several systems for not a lot of money which would save several kilos and might give you an extra horse or two.

You could also try going down one or two teeth on the rear sprocket but that might be a bit too much, the only way to find out would be to try it

You are doing well, my Speed 400 never got near that, even indicated on the standard speedo!

I guess weight would be the first thing (exhaust and cat, but that could affect the ECU and maybe the MOT in the future), then the only thing is more BHP!!

Looking at pics (I don't have mine anymore) it's quite an upright riding position - what about some straight bars to tilt you forward/lower, and maybe a flyscreen like this to clean up the air around the headlight/instruments/handlebars...

Are you on the 400 Forum? You could have a search there -
    Triumph 400 Forum

I found this after a quick look around, although he has obviously spent £££.

"First mod was a Hitchcox slip on. Not cheap ,but quality has to be paid for. Improved mid range and gave a beautiful exhaust note. Not happy with jerky throttle I got down to business. Fuelx lite. DNA performance air filter Removed feed to filter. Removed the cat and fitted a TEC header pipe. Tried my Hitchcox slip on but to no avail. It sounded like a pissed off T.Rex. Disappointed I bought a TEC slip on with a quiet baffle. Last but not least I fitted a 16T engine sprocket. Well well. It sounded ok ,but did it go? You betcha. I allowed the fuelx lite a few miles to settle down and gave it the beans. To say it surprised me is an understatement. Ive since covered 400 miles and it appears to get better every ride. Accelerating has improved enormously and top end goes off the clock. the extra tooth pays dividends but to get the best the g.box must be used. Of course ive,got no warranty now but the rev limiter ensures no harm to the engine."

Here's a radical idea: "Close enough!" In what world does it make a difference if you can reach 98, and not 100? Really? Sorry to rain on your crusade, but this seems like a fruitless errand. No offense intended, of course.

PS. My Sprint GT has an announced top speed of 142, but I've only ever touched 115.

Sometimes we just need a challenge!

At some point I've pinned every bike I've had "just to see what it would do", with the target always being "the ton". Maybe at 72 I just haven't grown up yet!!

I always tested the top speed of my bikes in the past and I am still doing it But I never changed parts as you do it on your trial. ;)

Being that close, you could probably crack it just by paying close attention to your body positioning, removing mirrors, finding a downhill stretch of road or eating some beans...:)

As the Yanks say “there is no substitute for cubes”

If you have any airfields near you it might be worth trying some AvGas. Piston engined aircraft are still allowed to use leaded petrol which will have an octane rating of at least 100.

If you want to hit those speeds maybe its the wrong bike for you, maybe look at a Street Triple.

My Striple is the only bike I’ve owned that I haven’t had flat out, yet. But I can tell you that in third gear the rev limiter kicks in at an indicated 135.

I have just been chatting with my mate who holds a number of land speed records on his Triumph Bonneville. The subject of AvGas came up and he recommended these guys.

He usually runs his race bike on leaded 105 octane but says they can supply fuel with an octane rating as high as 112. Usually comes in 25 litre drums. This could be the solution you are looking for with the right gearing.
