Yes, back then they used to compete in more than one class. Like Hailwood on the 250 & 350 6s and 500 4 Hondas.
Steve Parrish interviews Freddie Spencer at Brooklands Interesting to hear him talk about Zolder. Used to do the Lion Rally in the late 60s. The bike would be all prepped and loaded on the Thursday so catch the bus to work on the Friday. Get back home grab some tea and then ride the bike down to Dover to catch the night ferry to Ostend. Arrive at the race circuit early hours Saturday morning, catch a few hours sleep before many drinky poos on Saturday night. Sunday was a free for all around Zolder circuit until lunch time then head for Ostend and home arriving late Sunday. Monday morning ride to work. One year on the way home, still in Belgium we had been on the duel carriage way for over an hour at a steady 80 and I was two up. Just pulling up the off ramp and the back wheel locks solid. The primary chain spring link horseshoe clip had snapped in half and the chain had all piled on top of the clutch drum. In those days you used to carry virtually your entire meagre tool kit and whatever spares you had to hand. Between us we effected a repair which entailed dismantling a dozen or so links in the chain and rebuilding it. It not only got me back home but also got me to work and back the whole of the following week until I could fit a new chain.
