We all know Henry Cole is a bit marmite but I think we can all agree that without him TV would be severely lacking in motorcycle programmes.

I've just watched his Sled&Buried Christmas Special from last night. You all know the format but this time 3 of them head to Austria (no Alan M. on this trip). Long story, but they end up buying a Ski-Doo for an extortionate price and I found their trial run up a mountain laugh-out-loud :joy:

However, the highlight is their visit to a motorcycle museum (which also has some very tasty cars). The aim of the museum is to gather together 95% of every important bike ever made, so it covers all makes and every decade. It is fantastic and probably the best motorcycle museum I've ever seen, even the way they are displayed is amazing. I could happily spend all day in there.

So get yourself a mug of mulled wine, a hot mince pie and treat yourself to a very enjoyable hour of motorcycle TV. Merry Christmas!

Yup, he's pretty unique and his way of portraying bikes is original (in my experience) and draws in people who wouldn't otherwise be interested.

Yeah, Henry's OK - I watched some early Motorbike Shows recently and he was much less the old 'curmudgeon' character that he portrays now. In fact, he was almost hands on with the bike rebuild.....

I'm 72 and watching him shuffle around at 61 makes me feel quite fit and flexible!! :grinning:

I think new shows will move to his own pay per month streaming site which would be a shame. Maybe they will eventually reach a mainstream TV station.

I don't know how much he earns from having his progs shown on Quest etc but I'd be surprised if he would get as much through his streaming site.
Most of his audience aren't exactly young (a reflection of motorcycling generally) and are perfectly happy to watch him on TV without paying extra.

Being a Yank, I had to look up Marmite. Sounds like an acquired taste. Also sounds like something you can keep over there, thank you.

Marmite, pah it's 2nd rate compared to Bovril (Marmite is made from yeast extract so veggy friendly, Bovril also has beef extract so similar but better IMO). They're not so much an acquired taste, more you either love them or hate them which Marmite use as part of their advertising campaigns. Marmite is used in the English language in that context, saying something is "Marmite"

Anyway back to Henry. He's just about all we've got and I quite like him. The way they interact as mates is quite typical of the British sense of humour too, which many can relate to whether they're bikers or not.

We'll happily keep our Marmite, can we send you a reciprocal list? :joy:

When l used to go down to County or Forest as a kid all the old farts had Bovril and spam sarnies. Used to stink the stands out at halftime :grinning:
I think Henry's a supercilious twat, for the record :)

Oh I disagree, I think he often shows great admiration for the people he comes in contact with who can build bikes, make bikes work or are skilled in ways he isn't. He can be self deprecating at times and admits he knows little of any use, except how to make tea.
He may also be a twat but I don't care as long as he puts bikes on the telly.

Henry's good entertainment with little practical skills but none the less makes good viewing. I like it when Skid (Guy) takes the mickey a bit, all in good fun of course. I thought Fuzz coming on board was a mistake in the first few episodes but he's fitted in quite nicely now. Which leaves Alan who of course is an exceptional engineer and bike builder that can turn his hand to just about anything. :)

I often feel Skid is put down a bit, and he's just left cleaning and polishing stuff, despite being a capable bike builder and repairer! I wasn't sure about Fuzz either, but he's fitting in now and Alan..... well, he's a hell of an engineer, but an odd wee fellow!

I used to really dislike Henry Cole and still find him irritating at times on The Motorbike Show with some of his mannerisms and the fact that his reviews don't actually tell me what I want to know BUT he is bringing motorcycling content to the "mass" audience and I love watching Allen Millyard for both his brilliance and the relationship he has with Henry and do like both Guy and Fuzz. The Sled and Buried Christmas special was just some gentle, entertaining viewing I think and I did enjoy it.

Marmite v Bovril? I like both and always have a jar of each in the cupboard :D.

Apparently every outtake from his TV programs feature bikes that never started first kick after a full engine rebuild.
Took me a whilst to realise that when Henry was talking about the Isle of Man Man, he was actually talking about the Isle of Man, man.

I know opinion is divided on Henry Cole, for me however, I have great respect for how he has overcome such dark difficulties of the past, and from my professional experience, not many do come out ok, and then go on to achieve what he has. What the shows do however, is bring biking to a wider audience than would otherwise be the case, and that has in itself got to be a good thing, especially when the biking community is under such great threat in the UK. And also, it has brought the talents of so many bike builders, who many people previously did not know about, and that in iteself has to be a positive thing.

His show`s are fabulous for motorcycling & tourism,.

Yes they only scratch the surface most of the time but i bet many a rider has looked up the roads travelled & places visited by H. Millyard is an absolute genius , Skid is an amusing fellow, Fuzz is err getting there.

    Long may he continue imho
