Anybody used one of these for tensioning or checking chain tension?

All I have ever done is use a steel ruler to measure the distance at the tightest point midway in the chain. Personally, the time it takes to set that up I can have the job done, and a quality steel rule is not that expensive.

    Hi RB,
Looks pretty much identical to the 'Chain Monkey' one, which I have used...does the job, but as Iceman said above, a ruler does the job too, is cheaper and ultimately less hassle.

I have a chain monkey and the theory is good but I'm no so convinced about the application.

The idea is that it puts a kink in the chain so you can just fit it and adjust the wheel until the chain is tight. Then you removed the tool and the correct amount of slack is put back into the chain. You only need to figure out the values once to suit your bike so there's no messing about trying to measure things every time.

However, there is a still a fairly large element of feel and judgement to it. It's still possible to tighten everything up and end up with a chain that's too tight or vice versa.

One of my lads has one of these contraptions. As the guys say above, it’s so much easier to get the steel ruler out.
