1999 Trophy 1200 Suspicious Engine Knock

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Thescousesqurriel, Dec 4, 2025 at 1:43 PM.

  1. hello everyone, I have a little issue, I got a 1200 Black block Trophy a couple months ago from bringing back to the road, I have found at idle the engine has a Knock to what to me seems to be the left side, I rebuilt the carbs months ago and don't know if this is involved but will mention anyway on choke it sounds Fine and riding But once at idle it starts to knock in or out of gear with clutch in and out, I hope someone has an idea on what it could be or what I could be looking for

It could be the alternator shaft coming loose. If the sound gets less or goes away when you turn the lights on that will confirm it.

That's likely the infamous Triumph crocodile tick from the primary drive chain tensioner. It's loud at idle and often quiets down with rpm. It's a known, mostly harmless quirk on those older triples. Check the oil level first. If you want to quiet it, you can look into the upgraded manual tensioner from Steve Scriminger or T3.
