"Worst hit is Fife with a 300% increase" - that's horrendous until you see that the increase is from 0 thefts to 3 thefts!! Central Scotland, which seems to be the nearest region to where I live, has gone from 0 to 2 thefts, so a 200% increase....

Get a pinch of salt out, because as the saying goes, there are three kinds of lies - lies, damn lies and statistics!!

To be fair, they do put it into perspective in the article. Our policing area has gone from 12 to 23, however it is huge geographically, covering around 3000 square miles and encompassing some very urban and very rural areas so it would be likely that the thefts are occurring in the urban areas probably to the north of the force area. What is also not taken account of either is thefts of multiple bikes from one garage so one incidence of theft could for example see four bikes taken.

Yes they do, it's just funny to compare the green and white areas (could be assumed safe?) with the red areas (danger, danger, danger!). The number of thefts certainly tell a different story.

It seems a very flawed data set only comparing 2 months.
You can't really draw any meaningful trending conclusions from a snapshot
