    Howdy all.

Just when I thought I was retiring next year work has found me a new role which comes with a further 2 years of gainful employment. So what you ask, what's it got to do with us Americans?

Well, in Jan/Feb next year I will be in Virginia and just wondered if anyone would have any hidden gems of places to visit or things to do. I can obviously find the standard stuff but local knowledge can throw up some great unexpected experiences.

Unfortunately it's the wrong time of year for riding in the Virginia area :cold_sweat: so just wondering what else is out there. I know the US is a massive place and most of you are hundreds or thousands of miles away but equally there's lots of you over there that have travelled extensively and may have some great snippets of info.

Any ideas would be gratefully welcomed

Are you riding 2 wheels or driving 4 wheels? Or walking/hiking? What do you like to do on holidays, regardless of country?

Hi chassis, I would imagine 4 wheels as the temp in Jan/Feb is between 29° and 48°F. I like exploring, beer (and wine), history, bikes (obv), diving, food and just finding interesting things, people, places etc .....and I will be visiting at least one Bass Pro shop :joy:

Thanks. One more question - where in general will you be located? Washington DC or elsewhere? Virginia is a big state.

Yes apologies, we often don't appreciate just how vast the US is from this side of the pond. I will be about 60 miles SW of Richmond VA.

Thanks. Some ideas, in no particular order. I lean towards outdoor activities.

    1. Washington, DC. The nation's capital. Many public and no-cost admission sights. A common activity for first time visitors is to walk the "mall" and see the monuments. Approximately 3 hours one way by car from your location. It would be a long one day or a more relaxed two day effort.

    2. Historic Jamestown. The first permanent English settlement in the Americas. 2 hours one way by car from your location. Several hours from your location, make it day trip.

    3. Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive. See the excellent mountains in this area by driving along Skyline Drive. Enter where highway US-33 intersects Skyline Drive, and head south. Exit Skyline Drive at the junction of US-250 and I-64. Enjoy dinner at the Edelweiss Restaurant in Staunton, along I-64. This is an excellent German restaurant that we found by accident during travels, years ago.

    4. Shenandoah National Park, hiking. Depending on the weather hiking in the southern part of the park near the end of your stay would be enjoyable during mid day. A two or three hour walk on one of the many trails sounds great to me! :)

    5. Virginia Beach. The main beach at Virginia Beach is impressive to my eyes - large and sandy. The area is dense with shipbuilding and has a large military installation. Facing east on the beach, you can imagine seeing England! :). Hampton Roads Naval Museum is nearby - the name is self explanatory. Interesting if you like museums and naval history.

These are general ideas. Virginia has alot of history, and natural beauty. You will enjoy it.
