A custom kitchen spice rack is a practical woodworking project that enhances both organization and kitchen aesthetics. Using the right router bits, specifically the dado router bit and straight router bit, ensures strong joints and precise cuts.

    Step 1: Cutting the Panels
Begin by cutting the side panels, back panel, shelves, and front trim to the desired dimensions. Accurate measurements are critical because the shelves must fit snugly into the dado grooves and align properly with the front trim.

    Step 2: Cutting Dado Grooves
Use a dado router bit to cut grooves along the inner faces of the side panels where the shelves will sit. Multiple shallow passes are recommended to prevent tear-out and ensure smooth, even grooves. Test on a scrap piece to confirm the depth and width before cutting the actual panels.

Step 3: Trimming and Edge Detailing
The straight router bit is ideal for trimming the edges of the panels and the shelves. You can also use it to add small decorative grooves along the front trim for aesthetic appeal. Using a fence or guide ensures straight, consistent cuts.

    Step 4: Assembly
Fit the shelves into the dado grooves and attach the back panel. Apply wood glue to the joints and clamp the assembly to maintain alignment while drying. Make sure all shelves are level and evenly spaced for both function and appearance.

    Step 5: Finishing
Sand all surfaces thoroughly to remove rough spots and burrs. Apply a finish suitable for kitchen use, such as a food-safe oil or varnish, to protect the wood from moisture and wear.

Quite like a bit of routing. Usually end up turning perfectly good bits of timber into firewood but I'm quite pleased with the sliding dovetails on the bookcase I made for my daughter when she was younger. It was only pine furniture board but the joints are still tight and solid all these years later.
