Why...why Do After Market Mufflers Rely On Cheap Bands To Mount Them.

Would like my 1997 T300 Trophy 900 to have a bit more exhaust sound like a proper motorcycle the standard mufflers are a bit on the quiet side to my thinking so have been looking at aftermarket slip on mufflers and to be honest the offerings are somewhat lacking to my mind. Many look like a piece of drain pipe bolted on and held in place by a cheap looking band that shrieks of "after thought" others are some weird shapes, and a lot have the must have carbon firbre effect plastered on them few are real carbon fibre.

So uninspiring these offerings that I went to an old company that supply a lot of exhausts and mufflers for vintage bikes and in fact I was pleased to find they were still doing this it might have been them that I bought the "Resonator" mufflers that I fitted on my 79 T140E in about 1982 and they looked great and sounded wonderful. Of course the exhausts on the Trophy are more problematic due to the kink upwards and outwards to the muffler.... A British Triumph specialist who was going when I had my T140E Bonnie is also still going and does so beautifully styled slips ons for modern Triumphs but not it seems for mine one types is een styled after the "Resonator" mufflers of the 50's & 60's but boy does he know how to charge !!!!

Delkevic are mentioned quite a bit but their mufflers mostly fall into the drainpipe bolt on look using the after thought band earlier I messaged their UK office asking if they could do a proper mount like the original mufflers but it seems they are not interested so might try asking the French place and see though honestly doubt it will come to much. Wonder if Cone in the US could do something for the T300 Triple?

Thanks but they look just like the Delkevic ones and also use an after thought band. Looks almost like just one factory is making them with different names/brands on.

Yeah, finding classy slip-ons for the T300 is tough so many cheap-looking options out there. Delkevic’s band clamp style doesn’t cut it, and the vintage-inspired stuff is either unavailable or painfully pricey.
Cone Engineering (US) does custom work and might fab something if you send specs worth an email. Otherwise, maybe hunt down a used aftermarket set (like Laser or Remus) from back in the day, or see if a local fabricator can mod a generic muffler to fit the Trophy’s awkward bends.
A shame nobody makes a proper, elegant solution for these bikes. Good luck hope you find (or build) the right sound.

Have spoke (via email) to Cone in the US they do not offer anything that is suitable but have given me ideas and some suggestions but for now this has to go on the back burner have more pressing things that need doing, sorting like house decorating as what to put in the market and downsize a bit I simply do not need 4 bedrooms, 3 shower rooms and a 10mx4m living room now plus get the MGF engine done. The Trophy runs fine will be better no doubt once I balance the carbs.

Got it, focus on the house and MGF for now. The Daytona hugger can wait. If you stumble across one later, great. Good luck with the downsizing and engine work.

Thank you really I have too many things going on at once.

Just got a little sunburnt, no shirt on (the thermometer is telling me it's 36 degrees C in the shade) changing rear discs on the Audi A6 just bought rear right was down to the metal wile doing it noticed corrosion on brake pipes so those will have to replaced before too long.
