I am new to Triumph and am loving learning about my new to me 22 ST1200RS. It came to me with 280 miles so basically new. When cold starting, there is a noticeable vale train ticking from the front left of the cam cover. It slowly goes away as the motor warms lasting 60-120 seconds (it's 80F ambient here so things warm up quickly) and, once warm, is perfectly normal and relatively quiet.

My question for the Triumph aficionados is "is it normal for a ST's valve train to be a bit vocal whilst warming?"

    Thanks,
    Bill

Hey Bill, I have a Tiger 1200 triple (not exactly the same motor though?) and it's a remarkably quiet motor in all aspects, just over 7k miles now. My 2020 Tiger 900 triple did start up a tad noisier but quickly quieted down.

I would definitely bring this sound up at your first service though.

    Cheers and good luck!

Bill is it slightly irregular.....metallic light tap.....Lots of the parallel wins have it.

Come is very quietly.....gets louder and goes away like it appeared slowly over maybe 2 mins....does that sound the same. first noticed it at around 500mls....maybe have been there from new and I didn't notice

Bought my 2020 T100 900cc twin new.....Its driven me nuts for 4 years.....had it to 2 dealers....dont know what it is but long as it goes ignore it I was told.

I checked the valve gaps...they were fine....I checked all kinds....I suspected it maybe the can chain tensioner being slow taking up the last of the cam chain slack.

Sorry just realised this is for a Speed Tripple.....said ST.....could still hold water.

In the end I decided to fit a new cam chain tensioner.

Not a 5 min job....special tools are req to lock the crank and can to stop the chain jumping and loosing the timing.

I made the tools req,.....fitted the new tensioner.....result....the tapping noise is greatly diminished.....not totally gone but lots better.

Looking at the old tensioner I cant see any problem.

I know the tensioner has an internal pressure relive valve....I have no way to check that.....all I can thing is there is discrepancies in that valve.

To be honest.....its prob doing no harm....with me it was just the not knowing.

Does it sound like your problem?

    Nick in the UK.

Nah, not sure it is a problem per se but just a curiosity. It is a light mechanical tapet ticking starting a few seconds after a cold start. It lasts maybe 10-15 seconds and goes away with just a little heat in the head. It does not happen on a warm start.

Likely nothing. Just wanted to make sure it was not a "known" serious issue with the water cooled triples.

@lolachampcar you have new bike there and things are tight and bedding in. It will improve after a few hundred miles. If you are worried ask your dealer to have a listen. And it is probably just the hydraulic valve train setting itself up

Sounds like the infamous hydraulic camchain tensioner "tick" to me. Both my Street Scramblers did it, the first one worse than the second but not noticed it on the new 1200.
It's not just a Triumph thing, I've had HCCT issues on other bikes in the past, the worst being the dirt bike on which I replaced the tensioner with an after marker manual version. While ever it's minimal and intermittent it's not a major problem IMO, more annoying than anything.
HCCT's are usually a spring assisted hydraulic unit backed up by a ratchet mechanism so very unlikely to fail completely.
