Hi all I’m new to this forum but I have just bought a Tiger 900 GT Pro and also an Evotech mounting bracket. I’m all good on the mechanical fit of the bracket, but has anyone got any advice on hardwiring the Tom Tom to the bike? My previous bike had it done before I bought it, so I’d kinda like to have the same. If needs be I’m ok taking it to Triumph to ask them to do it, but of course it will cost! Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Hi Stevie, welcome to the forum. Not sure on your issue I had a GT Pro last year great bike. I used the triumph ap on my phone for the turn by turn guide on the TFT screen. I'm sure someone on here can offer further advice.
I wired my sat nav to the USB port under the rear seat. I connected into it on the supply side so I can still charge phone, power bank etc. This USB port becomes live when the engine is running its not live with just ignition on, it actually has to be running.
I wired my Garmin XT to the horn. Goes live when you turn the ignition on, and the Garmin turns off when you turn the bike off. Done it on both my V Strom and Thunderbird. No problems at all.
Welcome to the forum, the Tom Tom has numerous advantages over the Triumph connectivity system as this is turn by turn, I only use the connectivity for the GoPro and use paper maps instead. Regarding hardwiring as mentioned by Glenn you can purchase a lead from oxford products (or other reputable company) long enough to go from the bikes USB port to your mount, alternatively hard wire it into the ignition live feed as this will power up the Tom Tom when you turn on the ignition, it is a straightforward easy job, however please do not use a dreaded "scotch lock" if wiring it direct to the ignition live feed, splice, solder and heat shrink the lead, if you are not confident with that then go for the lead that will connect your Tom Tom to the USB. If you charge the Tom Tom before your ride then it will allow you to programme in your route and any points of interest.
I did exactly the same. Crimp or solder a ring to one of the nav's power leads and a piggyback spade connector to the other and its easy to remove again, with no cutting into or scotching to the existing wires. That way your USB port is free for powering something else (mine has a long cable threaded under the tank to power my action camera on the handlebars, to avoid stopping to replace the batteries every 30 minutes or so).
Hi and welcome not sure if using the horn connection will work on the 900 gt pro. It did on my tiger 800 but then the canbus came in and screwed that up on later models. I have bought a healtech thunderbox which is dead simple to connect up and gives you the option to add a few accessories
Thanks all, some great advice. I think I will go with the USB solution. The question I now have is my dealer hard wire it for basically an hours labour cost, or is it easy enough to route and connect by myself?
Very easy to do oneself. I think it took around ten minutes to wire mine in. Fitting the evotech sat nav bracket took longer.
@Stevie Mann I wired mine when I had a Tiger 900 (and again when I switched to the 1200) via a HealTech Thunderbox power distribution unit under my seat. https://www.healtech-electronics.com/products/tb/ GPS -> Thundebox -> Battery, with lead to switched power (i used a vampire tap into the under-seat USB). There's a pretty decently easy path or two to follow down the inside of the fairing plastic and frame to get from the gps above the TFT (where the Evotech mount puts it) down to the battery area. I used a very stiff 3ft zip tie as my guide when threading the cabling. Be careful directly wiring into power in the Tiger; CANBUS can be a bitch.
