Searched, but couldn't find an answer. I have a 2012 Speed Triple R and want to know if the stator has enough reserve power to run a heated vest and LED driving lights. The vest draws between 40 and 50 watts, the LED lights about the same; to be conservative 100 watts, or around 8.3 amps at 12 volts. Thanks!
Maybe it's safe to assume that since this is the same engine used in the ST bikes the stator will be the same? And with a sport-touring bike it is assumed that there's enough reserve to run lots of accessories?
Have a look in the electrical specs. The alternator on my Street Scrambler is rated at 25A @ 1000rpm and 46.5A @ 3000. I would imagine the alternator on the STR will be similar. My ZZR has a rating of 35A/14v @ 5000rpm for comparison.
The specs say 35 amps, but the specs don't say what the bike uses to run (ignition, charging, electronics, lights, etc.). The difference is what's important for adding accessories like lights and heated gear. If for example the bike requires 30 amps to keep it running, and the accessories use 8.3, that would mean that with a 35 amp stator, the battery would be discharging at 3.3 amps, and could be dead by the end of the day.
From experience I'd say it'll run the vest and lights easily. Lets say around 12A for existing lights ( with 2 x 65w filament headlight bulbs, LED much less), ignition and "electronics" 10A max, plus 8.5A for the extras leaves 5A+ for charging, more than enough IMO. Edit.....I run some 50w led auxiliary lights and 48w heated grips on the dirt bike with a much smaller alternator (130w IIRC) and never had any electrical issues.
So far so good. I've run the lights and heated gear at the same time and there's no evidence that it doesn't have enough juice to run both. I also have heated gloves, but haven't run them yet.
