    Hello all,

i just joined this forum because i recently bought a 2000 Thunderbird 900 and it seems to be in excellent condition but when i was on the highway and downshifted from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd, the bike died on me. When i try to restart it, it wont start, so i wait a minute or 2 and i give pull throttle while starting it and if im lucky it catches.

Any idea whats going on ? the owner said he cleaned the carbs in May

    Thanks !!

Well usually you should not use throttle when starting so there's definitely an issue there. Is the fuel fresh? Could be a vacuum in fuel tank, try running with cap open. Dont forget to close the cap afterwards though. Does the bike tick over ok and run smooth if you rev it up and down? If not, my guess is that the carbs haven't been cleaned properly and pilot jets are blocked. Were they cleaned ultrasonically as this has better results.

hey how are u? thanks so much for replying. i and a negative zero when it comes to bikes and mechanics so i dont think i can answer you, sorry. Another guy on a forum mentioned it could be the crank position sensor on the 900 triple is known to fail. I called my garage and he said if its the crank position sensor then it wont be too much to fix but i already but in 800$ canadian since i got the bike for tires and oil change and handlebars, the previous owner only said it needed a rear tire. i put it up for sale on facebook marketplace but nobody even wrote to me.

this is my 2nd season of riding, i first had a 2012 honda cbr250 then 2016 suzuki azumi250, then 2002 kawasaki vulcan 500 then a 1998 suzuki katana 750 now this 2000 thunderbird 900. all i ever wanted was a 2017 honda rebel 500 that i used in the driving school but i couldnt afford it. the vulcan 500 was the best bike so far. i dont know if i want to invest more money into theis triumph, its carbureted and i think fuel injection is better for me. the owner said he/d take it off my hands next week if its not sold on marketplace but maybe he wont really take it back. ill lose 800 but maybe i deserve it. thanks again for your advice and time.

p.s i love america, its so cool

The coils is a good call too, Gill are not the best. Only reason I went down the fuel route was because the carbs had been messed with. I seem to recall seeing somewhere that lots of carb issues turn out to be coil related.
If you can sell it back Maybe that's best. I've gone from carbs (Sprint 900) to injection (T509 Speed Triple and must admit I prefer injection.

Yes could be coils. But rebuilt carbs is my guess something not right there and it sounds to my little brain the choke is not closing or you have an air leak. Please do keep us all in the know. The knowledge may be useful to other with a similar problem.

i went to the mechanic today and he rode the bike, he let it get hot first and drove it all around but found no issues with it. He told me not to hold in the clutch all the way in while downshifting, just pull t in half way, so maybe that was the reason why it shut off. or the idle setting. But if the bike shuts off completely because the rpms go down too much while holding in the clutch all the way ( im a new rider ) then why is the bike so difficult to restart after i hit the kill switch and im on the side of the road ??
