Hi. New to the forum & just to let other know I've been motorcycling on and off (not coming off) for over 50 years now. So coming to the point of this post, I have a 2012 Rocket Roadster from new and fitted with a DataTool S4 alarm. So other day (last Fri) in the hot weather the management light came on and would not clear but I was still able to ride the bike, it did finally cleared after I did not immobilised the alarm correctly and tried to start the bike the alarm went off and to my surprise the management light went out. So I contacted DataTool to ask if this alarms would set off the management light but they say no, they were surprised however that the DataTool S4 that I had fitted was still functioning as the internal battery was passed its sell by date ! . So my question is how many DataTool alarms out there still working after 10 years or more.

Hi Les  chop it out, it will only cause you problems (they all do) and will at some point most likely leave you stranded somewhere ;)

I am going to remove it and have a bypass connecter but I think when I try to remove it the alarm will be triggered so how do you stop this from happening, do you need to immobilize the alarm first !.

Hi Les, was the alarm fitted to the plug in factory connector, or was it wired into the loom as Datatool recommend, if your dealer fitted it to the machines alarm connector then it is a really simple fix, all you have to do is unplug the S4 alarm and fit the bypass connector and it's job done, however if the alarm was wired into the wiring harness then you will have to strip back the heat shrink material, then unsolder the wires that have been joined from the alarm, you will then have to re solder the original loom wires, using a heat shrink sleeve to make the area neat and water resistant. As your alarm is at least 10 years old, therefore there was a batch of faulty S4 alarms from that date, they gave all sorts of problems, from shutting down the system so a machine would not start, engine warning lights came on with no warning, more worrying affected machines cut out out whilst riding (as mine did) as well as becoming stranded in winter in an rural area, it took the AA 4 hours to come out, and then they had to arrange recovery of my machine. If you go to the Datatool website and enter your alarm serial number it will tell you if it is one of the affected units, if it is then Datatool will either send out an engineer to your home, place of work or arrange recovery to your nearest Triumph dealer, a new unit will be installed at no cost to yourself. Personally I would never ever fit a Datatool alarm on any machine again, it also makes no difference to insurance cost, and alarms do not deter the criminal fraternity from stealing a machine. Hope this helps, and ride safe all from an ageing Rocker.

Hi Iceman. It was fitted by the Triumph dealership and its plug & play, also I was given the bypass plug at the first service as I requested it just in case the alarm packed up as I do tour Europe a lot over the years. I have looked on youtube and some of the people who have taken there's off they had issues with the alarm going off while taking off the alarm and not being able to stop it other than drowning it in a bucket of water:sob:. The bypass plug has the wires looped from 1 to 2 & 3 to 5 so I hope they gave me the correct plug so des this sound correct.

Hi Les yes that is the correct plug, it is good that it was wired to the the factory connector it makes it easier to remove, the fob allows you to disarm the alarm, the paperwork you were given with the alarm shows the sequence to do this, it allows for servicing and moving the machine around without the alarm going off so it can be removed, throwing it in a bucket of water would be too kind. The standard factory immobiliser is better, a tracker is even better.

When I bought my Ducati new I had a Meta alarm fitted. It looked very impressive under the seat which had a reed switch fitted and the unit had a bunch of wires, all black coming out of it.

Eventually it failed, as they all seem to do. When removing it I found that two of the wires interrupted the ignition and two were for the seat reed switch. The rest were not used. I ceased to be impressed and have not fitted one to my new machine and will rely on physical deterrents.

Update on removing your Datatool alarm, just talked to Datatool tec guy about the battery life of the internal alarm on the S4 immobilizer fitted to the Rocket and 10 years is a good life for the unit !! so the next question was how do you disable it while removing it. You have to put it to sleep (winter mode) turn the ign on then press both button until it chirps then turn off and the unit has gone to by by's no bucket of water needed to drown it . Don't forget to refit the bypass plug as well.

I removed the Datatool alarm today without any issues or the need of a bucket to silence the alarm. Pretty straight forward just put the alarm into winter mode find the socket that the alarm plugs into, unplug it and refit the bypass plug job done.:)
