I have recently been restoring a 2006 Speed Triple 1050. I had to do a complete top end rebuild because the previous owner had left the bike outside for nearly 2 years. The owner says he parked it because he was having problems with backfires, idle problems, and loss of power. When I got the bike I put in a new fuel pump, spark plugs, checked timing and valve clearance, cleaned fuel injectors, new vacuum lines, and new fuel hoses. The bike has the aftermarket Arrow exhaust made by triumph installed with a tune done at a triumph dealership. The bike has the exact same problems the owner complained about. There is little to no power (full throttle doesn't even try to lift the front end). When started the bike runs and idles rough and when nearing running temperature starts to have random misfires/backfires. I have sense replaced the ignition coils after reading about problems with that year's coils, yet the problem continues. I need help I cannot figure it out and I am reluctant to bring it to a shop as I'm sure it's something simple. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.
Did you also replace the fuel pump hoses in the tank? I had an -07 that had similar issues and that turned out to be the problem even though they looked fine. Also check the wiring harness around the steering stem, they are prone to breaking wires around there. I also think I’ve read a bad ground giving people similar trouble
Yes I replaced all the hoses but I'll check the wiring. Just confused because it really starts acting up after it gets up in temperature.
put your hand (gently!) on the exhaust headers to see if they are all the same temp at starting? If not, you’ll have an indication of which cylinder is playing up.
Plugs. Check they are correct spec ones, if 1 cylinder is dropping out try changing plug over. Vacuum hoses. Did you use OE ones or silicone, if so are they vacuum quality, if not, change, Are they connected correctly,? Coils. Are they new or used replacements? Valves. Are you sure you have done them correctly, some people seem to get it totally wrong. Cam timing correct, loose chain could have slipped one tooth? Cps sounds unlikely but don't write it out completely.
There are a few faults that do not illuminate the MIL so it would still be useful if you could check for any diagnostic trouble codes. Is the small diameter rubber hose connected to the underside of the MAP sensor? The MAP sensor is attached to the top of the airbox and should have an electrical connector plus the hose which connects to the throttle bodies. I assume you also have a new air filter so there is no blockage in the intake system?
All really good ideas I was thinking about checking the exhaust Temps but hadn't yet. And the coils are used pulled from a running bike a 2008 model same specks and no difference when I switched them. Yes the map sensor is plugged in. I didn't use oem vacuum hose but I did use vacuum hose that should withstand the vacuum.
You have gone through so much that you might be at the point where you have to measure the fuel pressure under load on a dyno. Then at least you’ll have it narrowed down to a fueling or electrical problem
So I finally plugged in my OBD2 reader and got the following codes. P0108 (air pressure high), P0505 (idle air control system), P0413 (secondary air injection switch), P0351-P0353 (all ignition coils), and P0123 (high throttle position) - P0122 (Throttle position low). But don't know what to look at first. The ignition coils are used but are in working condition and nothing changing the other coils out.
Those codes all indicate wiring faults / short circuits and the MIL should have illuminated. It is possible that only one wiring fault has triggered multiple codes. The codes relate to the MAP sensor, stepper motor, secondary air injection, ignition system & throttle position sensor. I would start by checking the wiring where it passes the right hand side of the headstock as this is a known weakness where cables can rub through. Then I would check the ECM connector pins and cables.
Awesome thanks. I went ahead and cleared the codes and will see if they trigger again. But that will be my next move is to check wiring as i agree it seems like a short somewhere.
check if there is water in the fuel? has been outside for a while, and check if there is not an animal camped out in the exhaust?it may be blocked.
I had a Throttle position sensor fail on one of my Triples, it caused assorts of problems, but I am sure it put the MIL light on.
