Anyone know who I might talk to to do a Triumph 650 single carb 1972 motor rebuild. I'm on the East Coast, southern New Hampshire area. Dude Wheeler did the top end just before he passed away and it runs fine just has low oil pressure and I suspect it might be coming unglued down under because oil shine in oil. Not a good thing to see. The numbers match and I didn't want to put a rod through the case. I've got a lot of doe in this unit and really can't back out of it now. Dude put new wheels front and back, proper wiring. and all the little things that brought it back to original. So a lower rebuild is nothing in respect to what I have in this girl. [email protected] if you do know or are someone interested. Thanks to all the folks that keep these beauties alive and well.
Thank you sir, I appreciate your reply. I will be contacting the gentleman who's information you have given me.
Got to say it's one small world when a guy in England (the Country of) tells a guy in the United States that there is a guy one hour and twenty minutes south of where the first guy lives that is a Brit Bike motor rebuilder that that same guy needs to get it done. Freeking amazing I say.
Greetings from another American on the forum, Jim, although I'm probably nearly as far from you as @darkman! Good luck getting that motor rebuilt. As you've already seen, there are lots of knowledgable and helpful folks who are part of this forum community.
Jim Bergeron Welcome to the family. Do hit the upload a file button bottom right corner and show of the bike to the inmates here in the asylum. Joe
Hi Jim and welcome to the forum best wishes on your rebuild, looking forward to seeing progress reports
I always felt that those of us who have owned and ridden motorcycles see and appreciate life just a little more each day.
That's cool, @darkman. Thanks! It's always good to know about Triumph wizards who are (at least somewhat) nearby. You definitely seem to be Mr. Triumph International!
Hello MR. Darkman. I gave Jay Medeiros a call and spoke with him about my 1971 650 Trophy. My issue was and is concern about low oil pressure, 55 psi. on startup. I'm presently doing a "test" on the oil. I have installed an oil filter on the return lines to the tank. What my thoughts were is to run the motor for some time a few times and then remove and examine the filter media looking for any sign of bearing material. Jay does agree that 55 psi is low for that motor and said he would take the bike on his timeline (he is very busy) and do a rebuild. My 1970 Bonneville was never less than 70 psi and everything I read about the 650 unit indicates 70-80 psi is where they should run at. This old Trophy has been a restoration story I won't bore you with but like other restorations sometimes there is no going backwards once it starts. Thank you again for the referral. Jim Bergeron, Pelham NH USA ( Now you know my town's name is straight out of Jolly old England).
Great news on speaking with Jay, the PRV blow off is set around 60/65 psi so on cold start up you should see over 60 psi min.
Exactly. I have shimmed the Pressure relief valve to eliminate that as a cause. I have replaced the oil pump with a Morgo brand right out of England to eliminate that possibility. I have replaced the oil seal on the crankshaft end where the oil enters to eliminate that possibility of low oil pressure and I have used three different gauges for the pressure reading. I'm thinking tired lower end with big clearances. Thanks from this side of the rock.
