Hi everyone, I just joined the forum. I'm a Brit living and working in Singapore. I recently upgraded my old 2011 Tiger 800 to a 2018 Tiger 1200 XCA. I also ride a Gen 1 Hayabusa - it's more of a project bike than a daily runaround. Looking forward to getting into the forums and learning more about my new girl!
Peter, welcome to the fourm ! How is it owning and riding a motorcyle in Singapore ? I know cars are taxed heavily, and there are fees to drive in downtown , is it the same for motorcycles ?
Peter Fowler Welcome to the family. Do hit the upload a file button bottom right corner and show the inmates your steeds. Joe.
Thanks Armando. Yes Bikes get taxed too - they call it COE - Certificate of Entitlement. Lasts 10 years and then you can renew. Right now a typical COE for cars costs up to S$72k - USD53.4k+ - the price of good car anywhere else. Here's link to the current prices which get bid on every month. The price for a motorcycle is S$9k at present. When I arrived here back in 2005 it was S$700. They do it to "control" the number of vehicles on the road by limiting how many COE's are issued. There's also import tax that essentially doubles the cost of the vehicle before you add the COE cost. So it's damn expensive owning any vehicles here. For example, my 2018 Tiger cost me S$34k - second hand - that's USD25k. My 16 year old Hayabusa cost me S$17k.. you really have to love bikes to spend the money on them.
wow, yes quite expensive, but at least I remember the streets being in very good shape Then there is the fact that Singapore is not very large, can you easily travel to Malasya if you feel like riding a long distance ?
In the past it was very easy - in fact for 3 years I was running a project in KL and drove up every Monday morning and back every Thursday evening. But since Covid the border has been closed. Many of us are waiting impatiently for the crossings to open up do we can go get Sunday breakfast somewhere on the sunny coastline of Malaysia a few hours ride away.
Yeah, most of the time - between baking heat (typically around 32C all year) and Tropical storms on and off through the year I manage to knock up around 100km per day with the School run and collecting my wife from work at night. The there are the weekends when I get time to ride with friends and or family.
Hi there! Nice bikes! I hope the lockdown situation for you will be lowered soon. My brother is also working in Singapur since March 2020. He is not very satisfied with the ongoing lockdowns there.
