Hey everyone! I'm new to the world of Triumph and just picked up a 13 Speed Triple. About a week into ownership the clutch went out and upon inspection the clutch basket nut had become completely loose. Is it common for this to happen on Triumphs?

I ordered a new Triumph clutch basket nut and washer but when I torqued it down to spec there are still open threads left on the nut as you can see with the pinkish-red loctite exposed. This doesn't seem right to me and I don't want to put the bike back together if it's not. Not sure if the outer drum behind the basket isn't seated all the way but it felt like it was. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That doesn’t look right. There is usually a thin washer behind the clutch nut that you bend over onto one side of the nut to hold it in place. Also there is usually a few threads showing on the shaft so I’d say the clutch has been assembled incorrectly. Have a look at a schematic diagram on world of triumph parts, select your bike from the vin number and see if your parts are the same, in the same order.

That really doesn’t look like i'd expect it to look.
I've never seen inside but i'd not be entirely happy at that tbh

That washer behind the nut looks like it is the type used on the back wheel?
    The conical one?

I bought that washer as well which is behind the nut. Parts are accurate looking at the diagram. Someone prior to my ownership messed with the clutch at one point because the cover was sealed up with silicone as opposed to an actual gasket. Not sure if they didn't install something correctly or not with the outer drum or the drum moved out of position when the nut came loose. But yeah, I expected the nut to be on more threads of the shaft which is why I didn't put the rest of it back together.

It has a concave shape to it with the word "out" stamped into it to ensure it's installed in the correct direction. It's shaped similarly to the judder spring

The silicone is a good sign that a bodger has been at work trying to skimp on the price of a proper gasket. Definitely something is not right and needs a complete clutch strip to investigate further.

That's what my line of thinking is. If I had to guess, they either forgot to torque it down or didn't torque it to the correct spec which caused it to come loose. It was something I completely overlooked when I bought it which is my fault.

Alright, so after a little more work I discovered my issue. While looking at the service manual, I was being a dumb dumb and completely overlooked one crucial step after I went ahead and took the entire clutch drum out. It turns out there is a hole on the top of the gear that you have to press in in order to slightly move the two gears on the clutch drum for it to fully mesh with the gear on the crank. After I did that and made sure it was seated on the oil pump gear, I test fit the basket and the nut, and it all fits beautifully now. Thank you everyone for all of your help and input. I'll probably update you guys again once the bike is running.

Nice one fella, looks to be correct now and I wouldn’t bet against the previous owner missing that step too leading to your clutch problem.

Well to throw another wrench into things, one of the bolts for the pressure plate broke off as I was tightening it down . At least it could be backed out with a small screwdriver so I fortunately won't have to buy a new basket

Just a quick update for everyone. Got everything bolted back up properly and took a little bit to get the clutch adjusted to the proper position. Went for a little test ride to the gas station today to see what happened. Happy to report that everything seems to be in working order. It felt great to finally get on a bike again. Thanks again to everyone that helped me out with this. Much appreciated!
