Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and need help already, but first my back story. Not had a bike since the kids came along twenty years ago, then I saw the street scrambler and the rest is history ! bought a 17 plate six months ago with only 2000 on the clock and thought i'd ride off into the sunset. After an initial blast up to Clee hill in Shropshire I was loving life, unfortunately on my way home it lost power. Got home OK but doing 20 mph uphill and not much more on the flat. Took it to Triumph Stratford who changed the leads but hasn't cured the problem as I found out on the way to Wales last week ! I get about 20 mins into a ride and the same thing happens, three times now but as I said it gets me home. No engine warning light so diagnostics no use even if I wanted to pay them £100 for the privilege . Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received , Chelsea John.
Hi there. Did it "scream" on the revs or was it kind of "bogged down" and wouldn’t rev? If it screamed, possible clutch issue or if it bogged down, possible fuel issue.
Fuel lock? Try opening the petrol cap and see if it changes anything, you may hear a whoosh sound as the vacuum escapes if it is that. Do you have a choke, possibly sticking on? Coils?
Hi CJ, i would consider the fuelling too… was it stood for a long time before you purchased? (ie. in a dealership over the Covid period) could be the fuel injectors clogging or something? Or what condition is the air filter in? If it’s like the inside of a vacuum cleaner bag… then it’s struggling to breathe… Odd how it does it after so many miles, that puts @sprintdave in prime position for brownie points!
Coils breaking down when engine is hot is a pretty regular feature on here, so looks a good call. Outside shot could also be crankshaft position sensor, although that more usually gives a different problem-failure to start when hot.
Chelsea John. Welcome to the family. Yes you have all the right answers already. Sad it happens just when you got your mojo back. But all sent to try us. Do hit the upload a file and show the inmates the new steed. Joe.
Welcome in CJ. No experience of your specific model, but as previously suggested the symptoms first shout fuel lock to me, take it for another ride when it happens again release the filler cap and see if it's good to go again. There's likely one or two small pipes under the tank one acts as pressure relief for the tank check it's not blocked by a kink, might be a one way valve part way down - check that too. If the filler cap test doesn't work then temperature related electrical issues are next in line.
