Hi. Just got into the Triumph forum as I think I am going to need some help and advice. I am an ex-pat Brit in Australia and about 8 years ago, I bought a great Daytona 955i from another Brit and I have had it ever since. I am only the third owner as it was a grey import from France. So, I started with a quick repaint and a new timing chain, and before I knew it, the bike was down to a frame and I was painting it in two-pack black so we were into a full nut-and-bolt rebuild. I am sure you all know how that goes. thing is, I had the engine on a stand and last week it fell off, because someone (me) took the tool box of the table that was stopping it from tipping over. We thought we had got away with it but we put the engine in and tightened all the bolts but as we tightened the bottom rear bolts, we heard a crack and oil started to weep from a crack above the sump. Bugger. Oh well, better get another engine and I have a local wreckers that has a few at a good price but this is where I am going to ask some advice. The engines he has are 2003 and mine is a 2005 which have slightly different cams, a little more lift and duration than the speed triple of the same year and I know there was a big hike in power around that year. I am thinking I might just swap the heads which might be simpler than swapping just the cams which then might need resetting for clearance (shims) as mine was fine. I could even do some porting while I am there as I am going to get it flash tuned (I'm presuming that is possible in the 2005 955i) as its got a different silencer and K&N filter now also. So, which way would be best, cams only or change the head in case there is a difference in valve sizes or something. Cheers in advance. Kingsley from Oz.

Hmm, OK, called him. Nice guy and helpful, but only does twin cylinder Triumph's, not anything with a three cylinder engine. But, a very helpful person none the less. Thanks anyway but back on the phones.
Agh,,, I found one. its from a 2003 Tiger 955i. it looks identical but will check on the specifications. I suspect it will be tuned for more torque and less outright power, so I think swapping the heads will be a good move. If, however, its the same, I could just leave it. At least this one doesn't leak oil from a crack and was running two weeks ago.
Well, here is the two specs of both engines. 2003 tiger 955i specification Displacement: 955.0 ccm (58.27 cubic inches) Engine type: In-line three, four-stroke Power: 105.0 HP (76.6 kW)) @ 9500 RPM Torque: 92.0 Nm (9.4 kgf-m or 67.9 ft.lbs) @ 4400 RPM Compression: 11.7:1 Bore x stroke: 79.0 x 65.0 mm (3.1 x 2.6 inches) 2005 Daytona 955i specification Displacement: 955.0 ccm (58.27 cubic inches) Engine type: In-line three, four-stroke Power: 149.0 HP (108.8 kW)) @ 10700 RPM Torque: 100.0 Nm (10.2 kgf-m or 73.8 ft.lbs) @ 8200 RPM Compression: 12.0:1 Bore x stroke: 79.0 x 65.0 mm (3.1 x 2.6 inches) So, mine has a higher compression ratio and probably different cam timing. the difference is 44 BHP which is a massive 41% power difference. As long as the piston is the same, then a head swap should do it, but if anyone has any other thoughts on this, please let me know. I'll let you know how it goes. I've attached an image of the new engine that the wreckers guy sent me.
the bore and stroke is the same I would think you would have to use your pistons to get the higher compression should work
if it the same spec, then I agree. If its not, I might have to swap the head or just the cams as they might have less lift and duration than my original engine. I'll let you know how it goes.
