I just purchased a '19 Street Twin that ran into the back of a car. Surprisingly, the only damage was bent forks, broken wheel, and a dented header. It only had 1900 miles on it, and in very good shape, except for the obvious. All of the electrics work, except it won't crank and I don't hear the fuel pump run. This afternoon I checked all of the basic items... starter solenoid, clutch lever switch, on-off-start switch, battery, and it seems the immobilizer is "on" (?). The little bell symbol is lit up on my dash when I turn on the key, and it does not go off. Plus the fuel pump does not cycle on, and it won't crank over. Now it's pointing to the immobilizer, and I have only one key, so what can I do about it? Can I clear the immobilizer myself? Can the dealer clear it or re-program it? Can I unplug it and just go without it? Any thoughts from anyone that had these issues and how did they resolve them? Thanks,
Sounds like you have a non-chip key A replacement chip key would have to be matched to the immobilizer by the dealer You cannot bypass it as it is interlocked through the ECU which MUST see a matching/key immobilizer pair
Thanks D'Ecosse, So are you saying the dealer can reprogram my bike without me having to purchase a new immobilizer/key set?
Probably not. The immobilizer ring/antenna is probably damaged. Afraid you have to take it in to dealer for a new ignition. Along with that they will give you a new keys that is matched to immobilizer/ecu and seat lock.
It depends on what is wrong: If the ring is damaged then you can just swap the ring out - it is just an antenna, the matching takes place at the immobilizer module I thought initially your ignition was perhaps OK and that you have a non-chip key that is operating the lock, but no chip to be detected by the antenna So check the ignition lock for physical damage to the antenna If it IS broken, then you need a new ignition and key and the dealer to match it to your immobilizer If it just a non-chip key, then you still need an immobilizer key cut and again matched to your immobilizer.
I'm looking at the black plastic ring around the ignition key slot. It's in good shape, and the wire going down to the bottom of the switch appears solid. Here are a few pics of it, and with the key installed and turned on. Here is the key too. I don't know how to tell if it is a chipped key. So if you think I have a bum key, I might be able to get a new one at the dealer? Then they would sync the new key to the immobilizer? Thanks for the understanding and patience.
