While putting together a tool kit for an extended road trip this fall, I happened to look at the front axle of my bike. I saw the axle needs a 17mm hex tool of some design, to remove it from the bike, in case of a flat tire. Most every thing I found required a 1/2" drive handle, of sorts, to remove the axle. Too big for a small kit. Then, by accident, I found this socket, which is normally used to remove the oil drainplug of various Volkswagens, and it's a 3/8" drive tool, requiring a smaller handle. Found it on fleabay, used, for $6 (American). Maybe this tool can help others who do their own wrenching
I have one that I got back when I owned vws and a Land Rover. I think it may have also been for something on the Rover? Also the rear axle but is the same socket I own that was used on the Series 2 Rover lug nuts. 21 mm I believe.
Nice find! For those that need something small and want to save money you can also bend a long bolt that has a 17mm head to make a key. Go to 5:15 in this video for an example.
