Hi, Just purchased this and carrying out some maintenance. Do you class it as vintage one here ? In the UK it is referred to as the Steamer or carb, as in carburettor model. 1.When I took the forks out they were 18mm above the top yoke but the manual seems to be saying top of the fork should be flush with the top of the yoke ? 2.I need a front wheel but cannot get a straight answer out of ebayers about what does and does not fit my make/model year. Any tips on how to be sure...I assume the part number in the original hub and wheel dimensions stamped on the rims but was the same wheel used on different models/makes/years ? thanks Simon
I understand the forks misplacement is a way of reducing the height of the bike (along with reversing the rear axle) to make it more comfortable with your foot/feet down. As for the front wheel I would give Sprint Manufacturing a shout and get their advice. And buy your spares there too.
I spoke with my local bike shop. They said that people set the forks high out of the top yoke to improve handling. Personally I think Triumph generally knows best so have set them flush as per manual. Thanks for the advice chaps
I had to buy a new/old front wheel. Ouch !! Having both wheels re-spoked, powser coated, new bearing and seals. Will send pics if anyone interested
Heck, yes. Interested in all and any details - and pictures - of the lovely steamer! As has been mentioned ealrier, raising the forks through the yokes is a device to lower the 'bike but it does result in quicker turn in thoough I don't think it will, of itself, improve handling. Be aware that rotating the eccentics to 'balance' the lowering effect front to back is likely to increase wear on your chain and/or the rubbing block. As has been mentioned, SPRINT Manufacturing are good for parts for the older Triumph bike range but details of your personal experiences with suppliers, etc., might help others in a simillar situation in the future so publish .... you won't be damned!
The fork mod you speak of does improve handling if done in conjunction with stiffer springs or longer spacers ! Stiffer front end improved the handling on my 94 trident !
I'm toying with the idea of refurbing the carbs....is this a job for a reasonably capable spanner spinner...and what about protecting the tank against ethanol ?

Defo, kits available for both Mikuni and Keihin carbs. If the carbs haven't been apart for 10 years min then all the O rings will be u/s and fuel galleries will need clearing. Get a cheap sonic cleaner (Lidl or Aldi or similar) and get the carbs cleaned right out then rebuild with new viton O rings. I also took my air cleaner apart and gave that a good clean up too. You might find the fuel tap leaks too - mine did and overflowed the LH carb to such an extent that it leaked into the LH barrel and ended up in the oil....not good news, but an easy fix. Some Yamaha taps fit.

I'm not entirely sure exactly what to order from Triumph di Yes, fuel tap leaks fuel even when off and I think something wrong with one of the float needles as fuel eventaully starts pouring over the engine if fuel if tap left on with engine off. Have purchased new tap and will have a go at the carb refurb. Thanks

Has all the rubber seal's you'd need ! If you can't find jet's , put the originals back in , after sonic cleaning them along side their carburetor bodies ! Do one complete carb at a time , unless you have access to more than one sonic cleaner , as they are usually too small to do a whole bank (set) of carburetors.
Cheers Cap. Have all the casings, hoses back on..filled her up with fresh oil and 50/50 coolant. Still no wheels as they are being respoked and powder coated but started her up last night and no oil or coolant leaks yet. I think I will take the plunge and do the carbs too. I've rebuilt a 2 litre Triumph TR7 car engine before but had the twin carbs professionally refurbed as I've always been mystified by carbs. Will send more pics once the wheels are back. BTW any Steamer owners in the West Midland (UK) drop me a line if you are local

Yes I spotted this kit too but thanks for the link. Should I change all the jets even if no obvious signs of wear or damage, ditto float needles ? Taking delivery of ultrasonic cleaner this week so carb refurb looking more and more likely
