I'm looking to get onto a Speedmaster or America (probably one in the 2000-2010 range as budget permits). I'd really like to have the fuel injection which I believe starts at '08?

The tanks have me confused. I stopped by a dealer today to sit on some of the different Bonneville models and see what fits (I'm coming from sportbikes). I love the look of them with the narrower tank that the newer ones have. Alot of the older ones (around 2008-2010) I've seen have a wider tank, and earlier than that (02-07ish) have a similar narrow tank. What's the deal with this? Were there two tank options, or did they just switch to a wider tank for a few years and then switch back? Would any of the 3 be interchangeable? I assume the current models tank isn't since it appears to be a different platform/frame.

    Speedmaster 790cc (-2006) have 16.6-litre (4.4gal) and 865cc (2007-) have 19.3-litre (5.1gal) fuel tank, that gives a 240km (150-mile) range.
    Speedmaster 1197cc (2018)
have 12-litre (3.2gal) more for retro sizing  but has better mpg

Awesome thanks for clearing that up. Weird they started the 865 motor with carbs for one year before adding fuel injection.

I'm guessing the 1197cc tank wouldn't fit the earlier frames, but do you know if the earlier two are interchangeable? They look like they share the same frame, but I suppose the mounting could differ between the two, ad/or have fuel pump issues. I'd be more than happy giving up a little capacity for the more retro style, the big tanks on alot of cruisers never really appealed to me.

Well crap, that is problematic isn't it.

How are the carbs compared to the EFI 865s? Finicky or are they pretty good?

Had a 2007 865 (865 engine came out 2005 in uk) carbed speedmaster, carbs are pretty reliable and easy to keep on tune, fuel consumption is slightly better on EFI bikes from 2008 on but as previously stated you get less fuel in tank due to space taken up by internal fuel pump.

The 790 and 865 engines put out identical horse power , but they make it differently . Rode a mates 790 back to back with my 865 , 790 makes power later than 865 ! Both peak at same out put .

The fuel pump would take up less than 200cc of fuel space ! I've had my fuel tank apart , to replace the fuel filter.

Wouldn't be too hard to retro fit a fuel injected tank to suit a carbureted bike.

I had a 2009 America. They went to the wider tank that year so accommodate the inj. and give greater range. Here in Phoenix I am interested in coming back to Triumph because I really liked my America but it didn't have enough power to compete on the roads of our southwest. Now with 1200 cc I assume there will be enough but they've gone and reduced the range with the smaller tank. So I'd like to know if the new Speedmaster can be fitted with the old 5.1 gal. America tank to give the range I need.
