From a strictly engineering perspective a satisfactory weld worst case should only fail at the edge of the weld. If as I can see in the main image a crack in the middle of the weld - this is a reject bad quality weld in engineering terms !! Very bad
Did the weld crack and allow the bolt to appear loose, or, did the bolt come loose and cause the weld to crack? H.S.E. Would determine which if they were involved. Ken.
I think I have discovered a crack in my frame.........and it has made me want to puke. I hadn't seen it before and what has made it more disturbing is that there seems to be some hairy tendrils hanging from it. I noticed it in the shower when inadvertently glancing backwards and spotted it in the last remaining area of the mirror that hadn't steamed up. Believe me when I say, you don't want to see a crack in your frame.
DVSA have a procedure for the public to report suspected vehicle defects and will investigate if a satisfactory response from a manufacturer is not forthcoming. https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-recalls-and-faults/report-a-serious-safety-defect

hmm, the 2020 Tiger 900 rally from a friend has a crack on the tubing, about 1 cm above the welds from an area that looks similar to what is mentioned on the thread, he does the services at the dealer. I haven't heard what is the story for his bike but I'll ask him and report back
