Hi. First post, so be gentle. I am about to get a Thruxton R and I am wondering if anyone can tell me whether I want fairings (expensive and, in my opinion,ugly) or a flyscreen (or a windshield). Has anyone tried out both options? For flyscreen advocates - any particular kind you'd recommend? Thanks in advance!
Hi Cayte I prefer flyscreens over the nose fairing, although your preferences may well be different which is great May be worth trying the bike naked first before making up your mind For flyscreens I can recommend Dart screens https://www.dartflyscreens.co.uk/ And welcome to the forum
Hi and welcome... flyscreens are ok but would stay well clear of bigger windshields ...agree it’s best to use the bike without anything first so you get a baseline to work from. Good luck
Definitely makes sense to use the bike as is first. Will do The reason why I am asking is because on my (albeit relatively short) test-drive, I felt pretty unhappy with the wind above 70 mph. This bike will have to go on the interstate on a regular basis because of how things are set up where I live, so it would have to go at 85 mph or so (not the speed limit, but traffic generally moves at that speed). In hindsight, I probably should have described my usecase in the original post Thanks for the responses so far!
I’m happy cruising at 70 - 80 mph although the fly screen doesn’t make that much difference from naked Absolutely agree avoid large windshields they look daft on a Thruxton! How far/long are your interstate journeys?
Love the metaphor! I tried googling images of a thruxton with a windshield. I couldn't find any. I guess they are too much of an abomination lol
I'd say no more than 2 hours. I am sad to hear the flyscreens are not particularly effective. Do you think size matters here? (I was looking at dart piranha)
I’ve got the classic flyscreen which I think is a touch taller than the Piranha and looks like this fitted For me at 6ft the wind blast was moved from chest to head - although still not ‘turbulent’ but noticeable at higher speeds (over 80mph) - I have found ducking down behind the screen improves things, although not very comfy and not sure I’d do it for a two hour regular trip but YMMV
I am a bit shorter (5'8), so it might work better. I checked the sizes on the dart site and the Marlin is apparently significantly bigger (which wasn't obvious from looking at the photos). I am thinking that's the answer Thank you for your help!
These bikes have smooth airflow without anything. I added a Triumph fly screen and it moved the wind blast closer to the head - it was better before and slightly smoother flowing. I left it on to protect the clocks and keep bug splats out from under there.
I have a Puig flyscreen on my Thruxton (900 not 1200). It does make a difference at speed and it was a fairly cheap option at less than £40.
Fairings = functional and ugly in my opinion and experience Fly Screens = good looks (some may be slightly functional) It all comes down to your needs. Ideally, a fly screen around town and a fairing on the open road.
Had mine for a while now but only starting to be able to use the bike again. I bought it for looks, keeps the clocks clean but otherwise don't expect much wind protection unless maybe your very short.
It's the Marlin slightly taller than the others they do but does nothing to deflect the wind over my head unless maybe if I crouched right down but as I said it wasn't for any gain in speed or anything.
