My name is Scott. I'm 61 years old and I live in northern California. I have a 1997 tiger 900. Bought it new and only put 5000 miles on it until 2002. I've dealt with a knee injury long ago and now the bike has some carb issues I'm trying to get it back on the road to enjoy it. I am replacing the junked stock carbs with a set of keihin carbs and they tell me I need aftermarket exhaust so the bike will run properly. I'm having trouble finding a company that actually offers the dual exhaust cans for my model. I have contacted a few companies I've found online that say they make them but they don't actually sell dual exhaust for my model only single for the later 97 tigers? Any help in my situation would be appreciated. Thank you forum
Welcome, Scott. You may have seen already, this site has forums for each of the Triumph models. If anyone can help, it's likely to be the folks on the Tiger forum. If you need any help navigating to it, just say and we'll help on that, too.
Hi Scott, and Welcome. There's a lot of Tiger owners on here. I'm sure someone will be able to help you.
Hi Scott: Welcome. I am down south in the Mojave Desert. I have a older 900 too. Although mine is a Sprint. Really not that much difference between the Mikuni and Keihin. I see no need to change the exhaust unless you want to. I fitted mine with dual Micron cans some years ago. I don't know if.those are still available. Jet size had.to be upped to 137's.[ It still has the Mikunis]. As we all know, the REAL pain in the arse with these engines is the airbox. Mine is modified a bit, but they really don't run that well without one. ...J.D.
Hello sir wire-wheels,thanks for your information,I checked on the micron cans manufacturer, they closed up shop over 10 years ago,a little more details on my situation,my carbs were junk, set for 17 years, still had gas in the gas tank and carbs,so I'm buying keihin FCR racing carbs,39mm which I believe are bigger than the stock carbs, they fit the intake boots but not the air cleaner box, they come with k&n air filters,so bigger carbs, designed for racing, that's why they say to install a better exhaust system, you mentioned they can be a little temperamental if you play with the air box, what's your thoughts if I completely eliminate the air box which I'm doing with the new carbs, found a company called Trident exhaust that offers cans for my bike, checking them out now, might throw on the carbs first and see how the bike runs,my cans or fine, the bike only has 5000 miles on it,not broke in yet, thanks
Hi and welcome. Heres my penny worth. I would only consider doing what you are talking about if you can engage someone with a dyno and extensive knowledge of setting up carbs (good luck with that. ) If your carbs are not idling well and have a tendency to stall as you pull away , its only the primary airways that have crud in them. What are the symptoms ?
Evil Welcome to the family. Good luck with your mission. Personally I would send my original carbs of and have them sonically cleaned and set up rather than all the hassle changing unless you have other reasons for the change. Regards Joe
