Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has been to States to do Route 66 or any other bucket list's trips ? Really thinking about doing this next summer, but the price for such enterprise from what Google has found seems to be too dear. If anyone is planning to do one next year or has done it in the past and can give an advice - would much appreciate it... And yes, it probably needs to be Harley Davidson... just because it is States. thanks
Yep. Not Route 66 but picked up Harley's from eagle riders in Vegas and rode up through Death Valley to Lake Tahoe, across to San Francisco, down the pch to pismo beach, then back through sequoia national park to Vegas. 1800 miles in 7 days. Did it in April this year. Temperatures ranged from around 10 degrees in San Francisco to 40 in Death Valley. Would have liked to go through Yosemite park, but still snowed up in April, doesn't open until may earliest. Didn't book any hotels, just found places as we went. Hotels/motels were really cheap. Awesome trip! Can't wait to go and do something similar again.
in 2012 myself and 5 mates rode from LA to San Francisco up hwy1 then across to lake Tahoe ,grand tetons, salt lake city, yellowstone then to Sturgis south dakota . then down though colorado to grand canyon,Las vegas and back to LA. three weeks about 8000Ks (4700 miles)with lots of breaks and time . cost was about $7500AUD all up not including airfare. if you intended to ride the mountains don't hire a harley. i rode a HD roadking and it was on the open road comfortable and adequate on any of their amazing twisty mountain roads i regretted not have a bike that handled. food is cheap as is accomodation. camping is easy and their camping grounds are in general very good
May be worth watching World Greatest Motorcycle Rides, Henry Cole did Route 66 for and episode (or two) and there are usually a few hints, tips and recommendations in the programme. There are a number of companies who offer packages or you can just arrange flights, bike hire etc yourself.......plenty of choices about no doubt.
I'd recommend the Henry Cole series as well. A mate did it in a car this year and is writing a book about it at the moment. He did it from the point of the music in the various places he visited. If he finishes the book any time soon I'll let you know.
I read this many years ago and it is one of the things I want to do, quite near the top of my bucket list. When I do it I will take my own bike out, what it will be then I don't know PS just incase the missus reads this: it's not the separating thing it's the road trip I want to do!
Nah... Moved the house, re-decorated it... Still doing it... etc etc... But that does not mean I will NOT do it. LOL
if you can, you have to do it! The west coast has some fantastic roads,i woudn't bother with doing all of route 66..unless you really wanted too (the best part of route 66 is over on the west anyway)
The glory road 66 is mostly a legend and painfully straight to boot. Lots of other open road in USA for good riding. Years ago, I used to host tours in West Virginia and the inter-mountain region of Virginia. Non-stop grins. Tennessee / North Carolina is another good spot, Bryson City. I am pretty much a technical rider, so like the challenge of two lanes draped over multiple ridges and though Appalachian hollows. Motorcycles can be rented in Nashville airport (Eagle Rider). Have not used this outfit, so can't say good or bad. People are great out that way and ready to lend a hand. Good luck, and if you are in Iowa, stop out and say hay.
Just my humble opinion mind you. Being a native born here it California, route 66 is much more a product of extensive marketing than substance. I had family in Missouri, so I have early memories of traveling back and forth. Greatly overrated. Boring as hell in my book..Most of that old crap has been paved over. It needed to be. ...J.D.
Have done the 66 and all over the USA by motorcycle, all with my wife pillion. Regularly return to do more trips as its a favourite with us. Happy to offer advice and suggestions if required. By the way Wire-Wheels post is spot on
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2058779/ Billy Connolly did it. Series is on Netflix and Amazon Prime I believe
If you have done any traveling in this part of the world you can understand why I feel electric cars have little future out here [unless you can make the damn things solar powered]. Miles apon miles of nothing in a lot of places. Example I-40 east from I-15 in California. You had better have a BIG fuel tank and some desert survival gear if you are headed for, say Kingman, Az. Or do a little more "map surfing" [check how many miles]. Check out I-10 headed east from San Bernardino, Ca. to, say Phoenix, Az. You better really love the desert. Dry as a bone out there. Nothing but desert. …J.D.
