Hi everyone, after an hours ride out on my 09 speed triple I called round a mates house for 20 mins. when trying to re start the bike it turned the engine briefly and then stopped so I turned the key off and on and it started. Felt like a failing battery (seems quite common) once home I connected the optimiser, I should of measured the battery volts but the cold had set in my bones. Anyway next morning battery still wasn’t fully charged and bike wouldn’t start so I changed the optimiser to full charging mode which soon sorted the battery. anyhow I Removed the battery from the charger and left off for a few days to see if a there was any volt loss..the battery remained charged @ 13.5 and gave a healthy 14.5v when running. So ... I thought I’d better have a poke around and tested the stator. 0.5 ohms between pins and open circuit when tested to ground the only test which didn’t correspond with the Haynes manual was the a/c voltage test which said it should be 35-40v @4-5k rpm but I am getting over 80v. Anybody else had these readings as on other bikes Ive had they would be considered normal but they are double what the book recommends. Any help would be appreciated.
Sounds all OK - exact a.c. voltage is not important and can vary from bike to bike. Important thing is they all meter the same for resistance and volts when running. The reg/rect will sort it out and sounds like that is giving a good output. I think the Haynes manual is a bit pessimistic TBH.
As Tim said above , so long as three Reading's are good , your charging system is OK ! 1 windings on alternator don't go to ground (no short) 2 ac volts when running at speed (any speed so long as same for each test) is the same give or take a volt or two , across each phase ! 3 output Volt's to battery through regulator/rectifier are stable and above 13•5 up to 14•7 v. All is OK !
Steven lley Yes may gust have been a blip in the battery. Make sure the connections are all clean and greased. Battery may just be starting to fail if it has bee a long term fitment. Mind you my battery in my 865 bonnie has been going strong for 10 years now. Bet you know what will happen me now I have said that. Regards & Ride Safe. Joe.
It's t'same problem a few people on here have had, including misen. I find it's when t'engines warm. If I call for petrol ont way to work, 1 mile, its fine. If I call ont way home, 10 miles, it struggles to start, wit symptoms like a flat battery. I lerrit stand for 10-15 mins and it fires up as though thiz never been owt up wiyit!!
