I have a cheap eBay job camera, in order to capture any idiots should a 'witness' be required if a claim occurred. On my old bike I was able to mount this on the base of the mirror, but on the Speed I haven't really been able to find a decent mounting point (or bracket which will fit round the handlebars without being too unstable to be of any use).

Long and short of it is, I guess I'm going to have to start considering getting a helmet mounted one, which is what I'd ideally prefer anyway (as it would show where I was looking rather than where the bike was pointing should it be required).

What does anyone with any experience of using them recommend, and how best to mount etc etc?

    Thanks

A friend of mine teaches bike training and says sticking it on your forehead acts like a drift when you crash. It's a hard one to decide

I use a Drift Ghost HD S, which is a premium camera but does a bloody good job, it is semi streamline but as mentioned this can be an issue (as with all helmet cameras) if sliding down the road!
Battery is 3hours and the Micro SD, (32gig) also lasts about 3 hours of recording in highest setting. But you can configure it to auto overwrites the oldest files when in use. It is high definition and easy to connect to your computer to up/download files and charge from any micro USB connection (I have a spare battery just in case as well)
I have a microphone wired into the helmet so I can laugh at myself burping later on, but it is sensitive enough to pick up road noise and other people talking when at traffic lights etc.

It is 'weather proof' in that rain doesn't creep in, and it does have a proper cover to go over the ports and battery hatch so it can go under water - I haven't tried this yet:confused:

Can get them from Action Cameras in London, I think they have a promotion of some sort going at the moment - 15% IIRC.

Just tell them Red Thunder recommended them to you, and they will look at you all weird and think you're mad :p

    I bought this recently: http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/141796006488

For the price I can't fault it. 2.45hrs-3hrs with a 32gb card on the best quality setting. I have a mount on the bottom of the screen and it comes with loads of other possible combinations for fitting too!

That is exactly what I am currently using, but have been struggling to find a decent mount point on the bike. On my old bike I had it secured to the mirror base, but I opted for the bar end mirrors on the SIII so that is out. The flyscreen seems to mean the camera needs to mount pretty high up if on the bars, otherwise all that can be seen on my side of the road is the corner of the screen.

Ideally I would like to sort out a decent helmet mounted camera, just because it would confirm where I was looking should it be needed! I also find with mine the sound on any video needs to be turned off when watching it back as the quality is poor......but as you say, and I agree, for the price it can't be faulted.

I have ordered another (sturdier looking) handlebar mount to try first, as I really can't afford to lay out £200-£300 on another camera at the moment. If it comes to it in the interim I may try one of the more 'bullet' shaped equivalents to the current one - plently on Fleebay for the same sort of money last time I looked!

Thanks for all the answers though - definitely some 'food for thought'!

I've been using this for the last few months and for the money I'm impressed.

You can get these from places like Argos and Currys. They come with a tough waterproof case and various mounts and accessories. I hadn't tightened mine proper on one of the rides and the camera bounced down the road when setting off from the lights and apart from some abrasion to the case it was fine. They don't come with a SD Card but I got a 32 gb Sandisk from eBay for £9. I mounted mine on the rubber boot on the mirror stem. If I have a gripe it would be that the sound is rubbish but I'm not really bothered about the sound.

Been using the Drift Ghost and Ghost S for some years now (Same as Red Thunder) Cheaper now than they used to be, current price about £250 I think.
I mount it on the side of my helmet while on the road, and on top of the right side radiator cowl on my Speed Triple when on track (helmet cams forbidden)
Looked long and hard at all the options when my previous Tachyon Micro packed up a few years back and the Drift won hands down.
Front runner was the top of the range GoPro until I discovered the Drift - GoPro probably has the edge in low light and HiDef recording options but to my mind this was more than compensated for by Drift features such as:
Bullet profile providing more mounting options (Bit of a Telly Tubby with a GoPro on your head)
Rotating lens providing even more mounting options
Standard 1/4 in mounting thread providing even more mounting options!
Waterproof to 10' without a housing - great for all but diving modes
Brilliant '2 way' 'wrist strap' remote - large coloured LED's flash to indicate both record and mode set - visible in bright sunlight when mounted on the handlebar. See at a glance whether it's recording or what mode it's set to (Video, photo, burst etc) No more asking people "Is me red light on?"
Video 'tagging': Set to 'Record and it records continuously but does not save to disc until Record selected again - when a preselected period will be recorded to disc before and after the record button pressed. Have mine set on 5 minutes - you just have to remember to push record if something happens!
Additional housing, waterproof to about 300' available for about £30
Have some track day video from it somewhere on here - Oulton Park in Track days section.

I've managed a mount which will do for now (the camera is at a slight angle, which makes for some 'interesting' viewing, but it achieves what I need it to).

I've resided myself that I would much rather a helmet mounted camera, as this was what I was originally looking for, but think this may be delayed a bit whilst the funds are sorted. As seems to be the recommendation, and having done some delving into this myself, I'm pretty sure it will be a drift.........just need to wait a little while!

More pressing purchases first unfortunately, need a new jacket and think I should probably invest in a Scottoiler........Me thinks the NEC show could get dangerous............and expensive!

Ive got the roadhawk Bullet R+ on my tiger 800. I had a few initial problems with it which turned out to be a fault in the camera usb port but once replaced it works like a dream now.
I purchased the additional costing hard wire kit (£24.99)!!!!! but it means never worrying that it hasnt recorded that all important moment cos of a flat battery. Just connect it to a ignition fed "live" in my case a live side of the brake light switch.
Picture quality is really good but the sound is only ok, but for an accident cam I think its really good & its literally fit it & forget it as it comes with a 8gb micro sd card, which is enough for my needs as its on a loop, you can also install it upside down like I have here & use "flip" setting in the cameras menu via a pc.....10 Mtrs waterproof too. So OK for those deep, deep puddles:)

Ended up also picking up a Drift Stealth 2 at the NEC (£89 - bargain) for helmet mounting. Used it this morning for my commute, but not yet had a chance to review the footage. I suspect I may need to tweak the position a little but will find out later!
