I remember one of the WPC's in Stalybridge (the penal battalion where dad got 'promoted' to for doing the chief constable for speeding) having long hair like that. She wore it in a plait. All was fine until some ned in Hattersley decided she could spin round with it quite effectively. She always had it short after that.
