Hi. The manual for the Thruxton 1200 states you should use new rear suspension bolts if you remove the rear shocks. Does anyone bother doing that or just re-use the old ones with a bit of loctite? New Triumph replacement bolts would come to about £16:00! And can you jack up the Thruxton 1200 just at the rear of the frame rails, seems to be quite a chunky lump of tubing as they bend back up? Replacement suspension bolts? That's a new one on me, but then again I'm no engineer. But at £4 a bolt I can see why Triumph would want you to change 'em. Or am I just being a wee bit cynical? Hmmmm ..... thought so!
Can't see any manufacturer using stretch bolts for suspension applications so see no reason for automatic replacement. As always a judgement needs to be made but visual observation of witness marks and fretting should provide an informed decision.
If my memory serve me right, when I replaced the shock on my Street Triple, I noticed that the Haynes manual stated that Triumph say to replace suspension bolts, but Haynes said if you do reuse then clean and use Loctite. So I cleaned the bolt and nut theads and applied Loctite, and I also marked the position of the nuts with a dab of red paint so I can see if they have moved...so far so good after nearly 3 months no movement.
I am with the majority here re-use the old bolts with Loctite. The only logical reason I can see for replacement is due to the possibility of thread damage. As Triumph only say to replace them if removed not at a specified service interval
Thanks all, I think Glyn on this forum replaced the rear shocks on his Thruxton S and just cleaned and loctited the original bolts. I'll probably do the same. I've an 865 Bonnie I've had the rear shocks on and off multiple times and always just cleaned and loctited the original bolts, followed by a dab of red paint as suggested. Cheers
Cant see any point in using any form of stretch bolt it would be pointless given the application....and as for using locktite i dont event bother with my classic vibrator.
Lol sorted....i am sure this forums text application has a sense of humor as i often have to go back and change something even if i have spell checked it first.
